In your vehicle shifting from gears between 1st and 5th requires a combination of and on and off operation of the shift solenoid valves. These are namely; SL1, SL2, SL3, S4 and SR and are controlled by the Engine Control Module or the ECM module. This hydraulic pressure is used for applying various clutch packs that are present in the transmission. If the TCM detects a malfunction of any of the pressure control solenoids it will set P0986 code.

This Diagnostic trouble code has to do with electrical problem, soin order to resolve the P0896 code you will require a DVOM or digital volt/ohm meter and a reliable vehicle information source. This source of vehicle information should be for your specific vehicle and provide wiring diagrams, connector pinout charts, and component locations so be able to diagnose the right parts and wiring as needed. This will be of tremendous help while performing circuit checks between the TCM and the transmission too.

First step is to check the wiring harness starting from the ECM and TCM going up to the transmission. Look for any signs of abnormalities or damages. You may find rodent infestation, burned wires, or poorly-routed harness. All these will need to be repaired or replaced depending on the extent of damage. If you find a chafed wire harness don’t ignore it, as it can potentially cause open or short circuit issues.

Move on to the connectors and see if they’re all connected properly. To be more thorough, disconnect them and check for any bent pins, water entry or corrosion of any kind. You may find intermediate connectors too (firewall or connecting the transmission sub harness and engine harness), so be careful and check them as well. Circuit check is next in line, turn off the key and using the EWD as well as the DVOM determine which circuits are carrying the signal for SSE (Shift solenoid E). You will be able to perform resistance check starting from TCM to SSF including the harness from the disconnected ECM/TCM connector. The location of resistance check will heavily depend on your vehicle's make and model, so refer the manufacturer's specifications and see if the resistance between two terminals or between one terminal or body ground is needed. Usually the resistance should be in the range of 10 Ω and 20 Ω.
