Error Code P0981: What It Means & What To Do?
OBD Code P0981 - Shift Solenoid "D" Control Circuit Range/Performance
The OBD-II error code P0981 Transmission may not shift properly is
also defines as a shift solenoid “D” control circuit performance/range. The
vehicles TCM or Transmission Control Module control the hydraulic pressure via
the shift solenoids. This hydraulic pressure in the transmission is controlled
because it is needed in order to apply the different clutch packs in the
transmission. These clutch packs in turn provide the various gear ratios
because of whom the vehicle is able to efficiently propel down the road. When
the TCM is able to detect that the pressure control solenoids performance is
not as desired, it will proceed to set P0981 code.
Learn More About OBD Error Code P0981
The gear shift solenoid valves are turned On/Off by the commands given by the Engine Control Module or the ECM in order to shift gears. If there’s an open or even short circuit in any of the shift solenoid valve circuits, the problem will immediately be picked by the ECM and the check engine light will be illuminated along with the P0981 code. The ECm also performs the fail-safe function, turning the other shift solenoid valves in good condition On/Off.
What causes this problem with the Shift Solenoid "D" Control Circuit Range/Performance?
- Open or shorted harness of the Air fuel ratio
(A/F) Sensor 1 Bank 1
- Problems in the Intake Valve Timing Control
Solenoid Valve
- The Fuel filler cap either remains open or fails to close as needed
- Malfunctioning of the Engine Control Module (ECM)

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0981
It is essential to diagnose this fault code. Here are some steps which a mechanic should follow for diagnosing the problem that triggered a P0981 code to be stored:
The
P0981 code is indicative of a performance related problem with the “D” shift
solenoid. This could be due to a failed sensor, an issue with wiring, or a
problem with the ECM/TCM. You will have to get hold of wiring diagrams for your
specific vehicle to be able to diagnose the SSD. In tools, you will need a
digital volt-ohm meter to check resistance and continuity of the SSD and also
the wiring harness.
Start
off with the inspection of the wiring harness, you will find many electrical
problems that are related to the wiring issue, or even poor connections. Refer
your wiring diagram to figure out which module is communicating with the SSD.
Now, trace the wiring harness going from the module to the transmission. Be
patient and observant of any breaks in the wire, damages such as corrosion or
poor connections. Pay special attention to ensure that the lock tab of each
connector is fully seated otherwise it could result in poor communication,
which hence leads to the code being set for poor performance of the SSD.
After
you’re done inspecting the wires, it’s time to remove and inspect each
connector in the wiring harness for the transmission harness. You are looking
for presence of any moisture in the connector, or corrosion on the pins/
terminals, there may also be bent or damaged pints or dirt and debris inside
the connector. Any of these found will have to be cleaned properly, repair all
the damaged parts and replace those which are beyond repair. Now reconnect them
and ensure the connectors are fully seated and secures with the lock tab.
Now it’s time to check for continuity at the TCM harness, use the DVOM for this. Start off by disconnecting the connector from the TCM module, now locate the signal circuit on the connector. You can do this by referring the vehicle information source and the diagrams in it. With the DVOM test the signal circuit for continuity to the chassis ground, it should be present. If it is present, then check the signal wire for a short to the ground, for this you will have to wiggle the wiring harness connectors as well as the wiring harness. Note any fluctuations that may occur in the continuity, these will be indicative of an intermittent connection. Now it’s time to check the SSD ground circuit wire to chassis ground in the same manner. You should find continuity if not, then check for a break in the ground circuit for the SSD.
Common Mistakes When Diagnosing The P0981 Code
- Assuming a failure of the Transmission
Control Module (TCM)
- The level of Transmission fluid is low
- Malfunction of the Transmission shift solenoid
- Problems with the wiring
