P0982 OBD Error Code: Problem & Solutions

OBD Code P0982 - Shift Solenoid "D" Control Circuit Low

<<See All OBD Codes

Your vehicle has five shift solenoid valves; A, B, C, D and E. When these are turned on the hydraulic pressure circuit opens, the function of which is to supply/discharge hydraulic pressure to and fro from each clutch as per the status of these shift solenoid valves. The shift solenoid valve is commanded to be switched on by the Powertrain Control Module or the PCM module. Any malfunctions noticed and informed to the PCM via a signal, upon on receiving this malfunctioning return signal the PCM will check if it matches its command and accordingly will set the P0982 code. These malfunctions include short circuit or open circuit too.

Learn More About OBD Error Code P0982

The combined on and off operation of the shift solenoid valves SL1, SL2, SL3, S4 and SR enable the shifting of gears from 1st to 5th. These shift solenoids are controlled by the Engine Control Module or ECM. If there’s an open or short circuit in any of the shift solenoid valves the ECM will work with the remaining solenoid valves ensuring the vehicles operates smoothly. This is also known as the Fail Safe Function of the ECM.

What causes this problem with the Shift Solenoid "D" Control Circuit Low?

  • Problems with the Shift Solenoid Valve S4
  • The harness of Line pressure solenoid valve S4 is open or shorted
  • Poor electrical connection found at circuit of the Line pressure solenoid valve S4
  • Malfunction of the Engine Control Module (ECM module)

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0982

If you want to easily diagnose this fault code, then all you have to do is to follow the steps which are mentioned below:

The P0982 is a code about a an electrical problem in your vehicle, hence you will need a digital volt-ohm meter or DVOM as well as a wiring diagram in order to perform circuit checks during the diagnosis. These circuits will be the ones present between the TCM and the transmission. For this, you will be able to find all the vehicle specific information including diagrams, connector pinout charts, component locations etc from your local parts store, or vehicle manual or TSB.

Start off with checking the harness, for this you have to start from the Engine Control Module ECM and the Transmission Control Module or TCM and follow till the transmission. Look closely for signs of any damages, like corrosion, short circuit etc. you may also find rodent infestation or a poorly routed harness. If you find a chased wire harness, don’t ignore it, as it can be a cause for open or short circuit issues. Fix the damages via repairs of opt for replacement as per requirement.

Now, proceed to checking the connectors and see if they are all connected properly, you can also disconnect them to see if any bent pins, or corrosion is present. Sometimes there may also be water entry or fluid present. You can refer the Electrical wiring diagram or EWD to locate any intermediate connectors like the firewall or one connecting to the transmission sub-harness and engine harness. Using the same EWD, as well as the DVOM it’s time to check the circuits, turn off the key and determine which circuits are carrying signal fro Shift Solenoid valve D. You should be able to perform a resistance check from the TCM to the SSD (including the harness) but to do so, you can do this from the disconnected ECM or TCM connector.

The resistance specifications of your vehicle will be different based on make, model, engine etc. so be sure of that before concluding that the readings match the manufacturer's specifications. Typically the resistance should range between 10 Ω and 20 Ω. The resistance has to be checked between two terminals or between one terminal and body ground.

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing The P0982 Code

  • Failed Transmission Control Module (TCM) failure
  • Low level of the transmission fluid
  • Failure of the Transmission shift solenoid
  • Problems with wiring
