The Engine Control Module of your vehicle controls the operation of shift solenoids. In order for the shifting to happen from 1st to 5th, a combination of on and off shift solenoid valve operation happens, specifically SL1, SL2, SL3, S4 and SR. All of these are controlled by the ECM module, and hence if it detects any open or short circuits which do not allow the vehicle to operate smoothly, the ECM will set code P0985. The vehicle will also enter failsafe mode wherein the remaining solenoids that are working well will be coordinated by the ECM for the vehicle to function.

The hydraulic pressure is what enables the transmission to apply the different clutch packs in the transmission, so that different gear ratios can be attained and the vehicle can run on the road. The Transmission Control Module uses the shift solenoids in order to control this hydraulic pressure. When the TCM is able to detect that any pressure control solenoid isn’t functioning as needed, it will go ahead and set error code P0985.

This P0985 code indicates an electrical problem and hence you will need a DVOM ie a digital volt/ohmmeter for testing resistance and continuity during the process of diagnosis. You will also need to get hold of a reliable vehicle information source, made sure it matches your vehicle's make, model, engine and year of manufacturing accurately. The vehicle information source will provide you with all the wiring diagrams, and other connector pinout charts as well as component locations.

Start with checking the harness from the ECM and TCM following them all the way to the transmission. Look for any damage signs like rodent infection, poorly routed harnesses, chafed wires of the harness etc. All of these will have to be repaired or replaced as per extent of damage.  Make sure to check that all the connectors are connected as required also. To be more thorough you can simply disconnect the connectors and ensure that there are no bent pins, corrosion or water present. There are intermediate connectors too present, like the firewall, or ones connecting the transmission sub-harness and engine harness. To figure out the correct locations refer a reliable EWD (electrical wiring diagram).

Now it’s time for the circuit check, turn the key off and use the EWD and the DVOM to find out which circuits are carrying the signal for SSE. You should be able to perform the resistance check from the disconnected ECM or TCM connector from TCM to SSE (including the harness). The resistance should be within the specifications given by your vehicle manufacturer for your particular vehicle. You will be either checking for resistance between one terminal and body ground or between two terminals, as per your vehicles specifications. The typical range of resistance is between  10 Ω to 20 Ω.
