P0984 - OBD Trouble Code

OBD Code P0984 - Shift Solenoid "E" Control Circuit Range/Performance

<<See All OBD Codes

The Engine Control Module or ECM of your vehicle is responsible for commanding gear shifts. It is does this by turning the shift solenoid valves on or off as needed. If and when there is an open or short circuit in any of the shift solenoid valve circuits, the ECM module will set the code P0984 upon detecting the problem. The check engine light will also be illuminated. The ECM will perform a fail-safe function by turning on or all the shift solenoid valves that are in good condition. This helps the car to still function but in a safe way.

Learn More About OBD Error Code P0984

In order to control the hydraulic pressure in the transmission the Transmission Control Module will use the shift solenoids. The hydraulic pressure is needed to apply the various clutch packs present in the transmission, these in turn provide the different ratios in the gears that help drive the vehicle efficiently on road. The TCM upon detecting an issue with the pressure control solenoid will set P0984 code.

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0984

This code is indicative of a performance-related problem with the shift solenoid ‘E’. This can be due to a failed sensor, or wiring issue or an ECM/TCM malfunction. In order to diagnose this code correctly you will have to procure DVOM or digital volt/ohmmeter and a reliable vehicle information source. The DVOM will help in checking resistance and continuity for the SSE as well as the wiring harness. Follow the steps below and solve your P0984 error:

The first stop for diagnosis is inspection of the wiring harness, several electrical problems concerning this code arise from poor connections and problems with wiring. Using the wiring diagram figure out which module communicates with the SSE. Now trace the wiring harness from the module all the way to the transmission, while you are tracing it be observant and note any breaks or corrosion of the wires or any poor connections. Make sure that each connectors lock tab is properly and fully seated otherwise it can result with poor communication. This can in turn result in the code being set with regards to the SSE performance. Once you have ensured that all the wiring is in good condition, you will have to remove and inspect each connector present in the wiring harness of the transmission harness. Be careful and also note any moisture that may be present in the connector, or corrosion of pins or terminals. There shouldn't be any bent or damaged pins or any dirt inside the connectors. All these can be a major cause for this OBD error. All damages will have to be repaired or replaced as per extent of damage. Once that’s done reconnect the connectors and ensure it’s fully seated and secured with the tab of the lock.

Now, using the DVOM check for continuity at the TCM harness. Start off by disconnecting the connector from the TCM module, and then locate the signal circuit on the connector. You will have to take help from your vehicle information source for the wiring diagram for this. You have to then test the signal circuit for continuity to chassis ground with your DVOM. There shouldn’t be any continuity present, if you do find it, then check the signal wire for a short to ground. Wiggle the wiring harness connectors, and monitor any fluctuations in the continuity. Fluctuations are a sign of intermittent connection. In the same manner check the SSE ground circuit wire to chassis ground. Here the continuity should be present, if it’s not there, then there may be a break in the ground circuit for SSE, so check for that. You can test the transmission operation to rule out the condition is corrected or not. If you find that it’s still present, you will have to continue diagnosis.

You will now have to inspect the solenoid E for continuity between the ground circuit and the signal. Turn the engine off and turn ignition switch on. Check the vehicle information source to check resistance specifications for your particular vehicle. If it’s not within the manufacturers bracket, then you will need to replace the SSE. If the wiring is fine then the culprit might be the TCM/ECM. For this test the transmission by exchanging it with the good module and see if the problem persists. Electrical issues are tricky, as there may be an intermittent problem in any one of the possible causes. After completing all repairs, you may have to perform a relearn procedure so that the transmission control module can determine gear positions again.
