What does the tie rod do?

The tie rods helps your vehicle in terms of steering. Tie rods have two parts, an inner and outer end. The tie rod works with the Ball joint in converting force from the steering center link to the steering “knuckle.” Simply put, the tie rods help with steering smoothly and the front end alignment of your vehicle.

What happens if tie rod breaks while driving?

In the worst case scenario when a tie rod completely fails, the wheel will break free of the steering assembly which then causes the vehicle to lose the ability to steer. At the first sign of any wear to the tie rods, steering is already at risk and the vehicle is not safe to drive.

Is it OK to replace just one tie rod? or should i replace both ?

It is highly recommend that if you are changing an inner tie-rod, and the outer tie-rod is an original part, it is recommended to change both or vice versa.

What does a damaged tie rod sound like?

A knocking or clunking sound from the front of the vehicle when turning at low speeds can be a symptom of bad tie rods. As they become loose, tie rods can rattle around at the joints and links, causing the new noises you're hearing.

Do tie rod ends affect alignment?

Yes, you will need an alignment to ensure your tires are not improperly worn out and ensure your vehicle is not leaning left or right while driving straight. The tie rods connect the front wheels to the steering rack, and their adjustment affects the toe in/out of the front wheels.
