The step 1 that should be followed is:

Verify the transmission fluid levels. Ensure that the fluid present is clean and in the required quantities. Now that if you have checked the fluid and it is in order, locate the intermediate shaft speed sensor. Mostly, you will find these sensors  mounted directly on the transmission housing.
