OBD Code P2748 - Intermediate Shaft Speed Sensor B Circuit Intermittent

<<See All OBD Codes

Stressed? Tired of seeing the error code P2748 flashing again and again? No worries, here we have listed all that you need to know about the OBD error code. This generic OBD-II code transmission may not shift properly is also described as an intermediate shaft speed sensor "B" circuit intermittent. The speed of the transmission (how fast its spinning) present in the intermediate shaft is informed to the transmission control module (TCM) by the intermediate shaft speed sensor for the correct gear engagement.

Learn More About OBD Error Code P2748

When the TCM receives a wrong signal from this sensor, it fails to shift the vehicle correctly from gear to gear which further hampers the functioning of the vehicle as it needs to change the speed and the rates of the acceleration. Either the engine control module or the transmission control module stores this error code.

What causes this problem with the Intermediate Shaft Speed Sensor B Circuit Intermittent?

  • Failed intermediate shaft speed sensor
  • Electrical problem in the wires between the speed sensor and modules
  • Defective ECM and/or TCM (internal problems)
  • Numerous other linked sensors/solenoids that are malfunctioning (i.e. input shaft speed sensor, output shaft sensor, shift solenoid etc.)
  • Polluted or low automatic transmission fluid (ATF)

Replace/Repair These Parts To Fix OBD Code P2748

  1. Speed Sensor - Suddenly noticing all the instrument panel lights illuminated? See the error code P2748 flashing? If you want to get rid of this, you simply need to repair or replace your bad speed sensor
  2. Powertrain Control Module - Fearing an error code P2748? A malfunctioning powertrain control module is likely to invite issues like a poorly running engine, increase in carbon emission, choking, stuttering and stalling of the engine. Well, to avoid these, we recommend a replacement or repair of the powertrain control module before it worsens the condition of the system.
  3. Transmission Control Module - Having problems with the TCM? Well, it is likely to invite problems like shifting into high gears and rough idling. Looking for a new one? Don’t you worry, Parts Avatar has it all. Mend or restore your transmission control module before it ends up being the root cause behind the error code P2748.
  4. Engine Control Module - Now get your error code P2748 fixed easily by simply changing your engine control module as this adversely affects the overall drivability of the vehicle.
  5. Diagnostic Tools - Good quality diagnostic tools help greatly in diagnosing an error code accurately. Don’t have access to your own diagnostic tools? Log into Parts Avatar now!
  6. Automatic Transmission Fluid - Delayed shifting, decrease in power and lack of acceleration are some of the most common problems encountered after the automatic transmission fluid is seen to be polluted. Now get your error code fixed with Parts Avatar now!

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P2748

It is essential to diagnose this fault code. Here are some steps which a mechanic should follow for diagnosing the problem that triggered a P2748 code to be stored:

Step 1

Firstly, check the transmission fluid levels present. Ensure that the fluid present is clean and it is filled adequately. If all is functioning in order, search for the intermediate shaft speed sensor. Most of the times, these sensors can be located directly positioned over the transmission housing.

For gaining access to it, you can get to the sensor from under the hood, which may include the removal of one more component such as the air cleaner and box, miscellaneous brackets, wires etc. Then you should make sure that the sensor and connector corresponding to it are fixed well and are working in order.

Step 2

Now, remove the speed sensor. Probe and clean it properly. Doing this cost almost nothing and if in

case you find the sensor’ pickup to be contaminated, just cleaning it will help you getting away with the problems. For cleaning it, you should use a brake cleaner and a rag to ensure that the sensor pickup is clean as the presence of dirt and/or shavings here can change the sensors readings.

Important: all the marks of rubbing on the pickup symbolize false spacing between the reluctor ring and the pickup. A failed sensor hitting the ring can be suspected. If in case, replacement sensor still doesn't clear the ring, the manufacture procedures for adjusting the pickup/reluctor gap should be referred to.

Step 3

The sensor and its circuit should be tested. For the sensor, a multimeter and a specific manufacturer specification should be used. Measure different electrical values between the sensors pins too. Easy way to do this is by doing it from the same wires but at the corresponding ECM or TCM connector pins. This will help check the condition of the harness and the sensor too.

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing The P2748 Code

Here we have listed a few common mistakes that should be avoided:

  • Malfunctioning intermediate shaft speed sensor
  • Faulty powertrain control module (PCM)
  • Failed transmission control module (TCM)
  • Wiring issues in the system
