About Axle Shaft & Parts
The driven wheels receive power from the engine through the axles, which are part of the drivetrain. The axles are responsible for transmitting the torque or rotational energy from the engine to the wheels, and some axles even bear the weight of the vehicle in semi-floating and solid axle designs. Depending on the type of drivetrain, a vehicle can have different shafts. Front-engine rear-wheel-drive vehicles will have three shafts - a propellor shaft and the two drive shafts. Whereas a front-engine front-wheel-drive vehicle will have two driveshafts. All-wheel drive or four-wheel-drive vehicles have 4 drive shafts, one for each wheel and several other shafts running in and out of the transfer case, which allows all four wheels to receive engine power. There are two main types of axle joints - Universal or U-joint and Constant Velocity or CV joint.
Axle joints are used to transmit the torque at variable angles without speed loss and excessive vibrations. Universal joints are more commonly used with propeller shafts, and they can transmit power at a limited angle. CV joints transmit power continuously at steeper angles compared to universal joints. CV joints are used in driveshafts in modern vehicles with independent axle designs due to their versatility and wide range of movement, which further allows better suspension systems to be used in the vehicle. Axles provide the necessary transmission of rotational energy from the engine to the wheels.
