Error Code P061A: What It Means & What To Do?

OBD Code P061A - Internal Control Module Torque Performance

<<See All OBD Codes

The Powertrain Control Module or the PCM is the one that sets this OBD code. It does so when it detects internal performance error in the engine torque monitoring system. This error can also be set by other controllers when they detect an internal performance error of the PCM (with the engine torque monitoring system). The Internal Control Module has monitoring processors. These are mainly responsible for overall internal control module accountability as well as several controller self-test duties. The PCM along with other related controllers monitor the Engine torque calculation system input and output signals. These are also subject to self-test. The Engine torque monitoring system interacts with the transmission control module (TCM), traction control module (TCSM), and other controllers.

Learn More About OBD Error Code P061A

The PCM and other controllers monitor the engine torque by using input signals coming from the mass air flow sensor (MAF) and the APP (accelerator pedal position) sensor. The Former calculates the actual engine torque and the latter calculates the desired or approximate engine torque required. As soon as the engine is on and the PCM is energised the internal engine torque monitoring self-tests commence. While this is happening the CAN (Controller Area Network) compares signals from each individual module. This heels in ensuring proper functioning of all controllers. While these tests are being run, if the PCM is able to detect any abnormality in the desired torque and actual torque, it will site the P061A code. The Malfunction indicator lamp may also light up depending on how severe the problem is.

What causes this problem with the Internal Control Module Torque Performance?

  • Fault in the Throttle Valve Control Servo
  • Open or shorted Throttle Valve Control Servo harness
  • Throttle Valve Control Servo circuit has low electrical connection
  • Malfunctioning Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
  • Damages to the electrical MAF sensor connector
  • Clogged element of the air filter
  • CAN harness circuits or connectors are open or shorted

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P061A

If you want to easily diagnose this fault code, then all you have to do is to follow the steps which are mentioned below:

  • Procure the necessary diagnostic tools first. This is a challenging code to resolve hence tools are very important. A diagnostic scanner, a digital volt/ohmmeter (DVOM), and reliable vehicle information source and Oscilloscope will all be needed, once you have them, proceed with the diagnosis.
  • Rectify any ECM module /PCM module power supply codes if present first. Then if you also note any MAP/APP sensor or TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) codes then resolve them and repair any parts as needed,
  • The Oscilloscope will be helpful in testing the APP and TPS sensors. Follow the instructions given by your manufacturer for testing MAF, APP, as well as TPS sensors. All failed components will need to be replaced. Don’t rush this process, stay calm and be thorough.
  • Now it’s time to run some tests, get out all the equipment you gathered and continue. Connect the scanner to your vehicle's diagnostic port. Retrieve all the codes, freeze frame data and also make note of them in the right order. Now clear all the codes and take your vehicle on a test drive. Keep going till either the code is reset or the PCM enters readiness mode. If the latter happens, it's a sign that the code was intermittent and will unfortunately have to worsen before correct diagnosis can be made. If, however, the code is reset, continue on with the testing
  • Take out your Technical Service Bulletins and find the code and match it to your vehicle model, year of make and engine. Compare the symptoms exhibited and once you have found the right TSB you will be able to find the right diagnostic information.
  • Use the vehicle information source and find the correct parts for inspection. Refer it for connector face views, pinout charts, component locations, diagnostic flowcharts and wiring diagrams related to the code and your vehicle.
  • Using the DVOM test controller power supply fuses and relays. Any blown fuses found will have to be replaced. All fuses should be tested with the circuit fully loaded for accurate results. If the relays and fuses are working correctly, visually inspect the controller related wiring and harnesses. Check the chassis and engine ground junctions too. For locating the ground and circuits refer the vehicle information source, and use the DVOM to test ground.
  • Now you have to visually inspect system controllers, you are looking for any signs of water, collision damage or heat. Damaged controller/s will have to be replaced. Especially those that have been damaged by water.
  • If you have found the controller power and ground circuits to be proper Then the issue may be due to a defective controller or an error in programming. In such cases the controller will have to be replaced and require reprogramming.
