P061D - OBD Trouble Code

OBD Code P061D - Internal Control Module Engine Air Mass Performance

<<See All OBD Codes

When the PCM detects an internal performance error in the engine air mass or the Mass Air Flow (MAF) monitoring system, it sets the P061D error code. This OBD is rather normal and found in a lot of automobiles. There may be other controllers also that detect this internal PCM performance error in connection to the engine RPM monitoring system, and hence proceed to storing this error code.

There are various controller self-test duties as well as over internal control module accountability that the Internal control module monitoring processors are responsible for. It is the PCM and few other related controllers that constantly monitor the engine air mass calculation system input and output signals which are subject to self-test. The transmission control module (TCM), traction control module (TCSM), and other controllers interact with the engine air mass monitoring system.

Learn More About OBD Error Code P061D

Your vehicle's engine air mass is monitored by the PCM and other related controllers. They do this by using the input signals received from the MAF sensor/s. It works very simply, the desired engine MAF is first stored into the PCM and other controller, and the actual air mass is calculated using date from the MAF sensor. The throttle position sensor or TPS and other engine as well as transmissions sensors also help in doing this. The actual air mass that is found is then compared to the one programmed in the PCM, accordingly the PCM will make necessary adjustment to the timings of fuel delivery and ignition. As and when the ignition is turned on the PCM gets energised, and the internal engine RPM monitoring self-tests get started. The Controller Area Network aka CAN is responsible for comparing signals from each individual module (apart running internal controller self-tests), this is to ensure that all controller is running smoothly. Both these tests are performed simultaneously.

When the PCM detects that there is an internal error, in the actual and desired air mass it sets the P061D code. The malfunction indicator light may also be illuminated; however, several failed ignition cycles may be required for the MIL to be illuminated.

What causes this problem with the Internal Control Module Engine Air Mass Performance?

  • Defectiveness in the MAF sensor
  • Corrosion of MAF sensor connector
  • Defectiveness in the PCM or programming error of PCM
  • Open or shorted circuit or connectors present in the CAN harness
  • Control module ground not enough
  • Circuits between the MAF sensor and the PCM are open or shorted

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P061D

If you want to easily diagnose this P061D code, then all you have to do is to follow the steps which are mentioned below:

  • Start off by procuring some equipment needed for the diagnosis of this OBD code. Even though it is a very common one, it required skill and also certain diagnostic car tools to resolve this error. You will need a reliable source of vehicle information, oscilloscope, diagnostic scanner, and a digital volt/ohmmeter (DVOM).
  • Note if there are any ECM module or PCM power supply codes present. You will have to rectify them before proceeding with diagnosis. Also resolve any CKP/CMP sensor or throttle position sensor codes set. You may have to replace parts if needed, proceed further only after solving this code completely.
  • To test the CKP, CMP, and TPS sensors follow the recommendations provided by the manufacturer in the information source you procured at the initial stage. To test the electromagnetic sensors, you will have to make use of the oscilloscope. Replace all the components that have failed the test.
  • It’s time to start the preliminary tests now. Connect your code scanner to the diagnostic port of your vehicle. Retrieve all the codes stored and freeze frame data. Also, make note of all the codes in their order just in case it’s an intermittent one and you need to verify in future. Now, you can clear all the codes and go on a test drive. Two situations can arise; one; The code is reset or two; the PCM enters readiness mode. If the latter happens, it would mean that there’s an intermittent issue, and the condition will have to unfortunately worsen before correct diagnosis can be made. If, however, the former condition arises then continue on with the diagnosis.
  • Look through your vehicle's Technical Service Bulletin. Ensure it matches exactly to your vehicle model, year, engine etc. Compare the symptoms, the diagnostic information in there will help you tremendously in resolving the P061D error code.
  • Take out your DVOM to test fuses and relays of the controller power supply. Test fuses with the circuit loaded, replace any blown fuses you may find. However, if you find that all the fuses and relays are perfectly good, then perform a visual inspection of wiring and harnesses related to the controller. Remember to check the chassis and engine ground junctions. You can find the ground locations for related circuits via the help of the vehicle information source. For checking the ground integrity use the DVOM.
  • Now continue your visual inspection on the system controllers, observe if there are any signs of water, heat or collision damage. You will have to deem all controllers that are damaged as defective especially if damaged by water.
  • Check to see if the controller power and ground circuits are intact. If it is so, then confidently suspect a defective controller or a programming error of the controller. In such a case, controller replacement will warrant reprogramming.
