P044E OBD Error Code: Problem & Solutions

The irregular problem occurs in the “C” electrical circuit to the valve of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). Introducing a sufficient amount of exhaust gas into the intake manifold is the main purpose of the EGR valve. Maintaining the temperature of the cylinder head below 2500 – degree F is the main purpose of EGR.

As the temperature rises above 2500 degrees F, Nitrates of Oxygen is formed (NOx) which is solely responsible for the formation of smog and atmospheric pollution. The powertrain control module (PCM) or the electronic control module (ECM) which is the controlling computer, detects an irregular low, high or inconsistent signal voltage. Common Symptoms

• The soon light of the service engine will be well lit and the error code P044E will be set. Also, a second code may be set which relates to the failure or damage of the EGR sensor.
• Code P044C indicates a Low Sensor Voltage and P044D indicates a High Voltage Situation.
• If the pintle of the EGR is stuck or partly open, the vehicle will not function well or stall.
• If the RPM is high or under a load, then you will hear a pin sound from the detonation.
• At times, there won’t be any symptoms at all.

See if there is any rubbing, scraping, bare wires, worn out spots or any molten plastic connectors. If there are any, pull the connectors separately and visually inspect the metal parts (terminals) present inside the connector. Disconnect the valve and connect the red voltmeter lead to the IMRC valve power wire and the black voltmeter wire should be connected to the ground. Carefully check the wires so that they are either not burnt or laying on the exhaust.

• Unplug the EGR valve and restart the vehicle if it starts and stalls and does not run if the code is present. If there is no change, then remove the EGR valve and check for any rubbishes.
• Try cleaning the EGR and reinstalling them. If it does not get fixed, the block the port of EGR and try restarting the vehicle.
• If the engine gets started, then the issue lies with the EGR valve and it has to be changed. By unplugging the EGR valve, which is controlled by the PCM, allows your engine to start again, then the problem lies with the wire where the solenoid may be slightly open.
• Keep the engine on and Check the position of the EGR on the data stream with the help of a scan tool. Now compare with the desired position of the EGR. If the readings are normal, you can expect a broken connection. If it shows a reading of % volts or more, then you have to check the signal circuit of the EGR sensor for a short, either to B+ or the reference wire with 5 volts. Repair as desired.
• Also, check that the ground circuit has a good ground path. Repair for any open or damages on the ground circuit which is controlled by the EGR valve on a vacuum with the EGR solenoid. If the engine starts when you unplug the EGR valve vacuum source, then there can be a chance of bad EGR solenoid which allows the entry of vacuum to the EGR valve all the time.
• Repair or change the solenoid as desired. If the code still exists and the engine starts and runs as usual, then there can be an opening in the wire. Visually check for wiring problems. If there are damaged wires, replace the EGR valve. Replace the wires that are to and fro from the EGR valve.
