Learn More About OBD Error Code P044D

The EGR (Exhaust gas recirculation) system is planned in such a way to lower the combustion temperatures under definite conditions, thereby dropping the oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) emissions. It does this process by recirculating inert exhaust gas back to the cylinder to be charred along with the air or fuel mixture. Generally inert gas burns will slow down and lower the temperature of combustion. The computer controlled EGR valve opens to allow the exhaust gas, flow into the cylinders. The EGR valve may be operated by vacuum.

The EGR vacuum solenoid which controls the Powertrain control module (PCM) is designed in such a way to deliver vacuum to the EGR valve. The EGR solenoid will open when it is activated by the PCM, which allows the engine vacuum to travel to the EGR valve. The engine vacuum will open the valve and allow the exhaust gas to pass through the combustion chamber. Other EGR valves are electronic which are directly controlled by the PCM. The PCM will activate only those solenoids which are integral to the EGR valve. The solenoids will allow the exhaust gas to pass through as desired by opening for varying lengths of time. You have to continuously monitor the EGR system for various faults. Also, most of the EGR valves will have a feedback sensor which informs the actual position of EGR to the computer. The range of this sensor is between 4-5 volts. If there is an abnormal high reading for a long time in the EGR sensor, then the P044D code may be set. Also, you can locate this position in your vehicle with the help of a repair manual of your vehicle.

What causes this problem with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor "C" Circuit?

  • The circuit to the EGR sensor is short to B+ (battery Voltage)
  • The circuit to the EGR sensor is short to 5 Volt Reference Circuit To EGR
  • The ground circuit of the EGR sensor is open
  • The signal circuit of the EGR sensor is open
  • Very poor EGR (Internal fault or EGR sensor or solenoid)
  • Rubbles in the valve which keeps it either closed or open

Replace/Repair These Parts To Fix OBD Code P044D

  1. EGR sensor signal circuit - A damaged EGR sensor signal circuit can cause trouble to your engine system. Replace them immediately.
  2. Exhaust Gas - carefully inspect for any leaky areas around your exhaust gas. If you find one, replace or repair it immediately.
  3. Powertrain Control Module - This is one of the common causes for failure in the system. Repairing this component can help you to get rid of the P044D error.
  4. EGR Position Sensor - Is your EGR position sensor faulty? Are there any damages or repairs need to be done? If so, quickly replace them or get repaired.

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P044D

In order to diagnose the Engine error Code P044D, you must have a few tools and equipment and also check if there is any fault in your engine. Some of them are mentioned below-

  • Try to unplug your EGR valve and then restart it if your vehicle starts and stands still and does not move.
  • If there is no change, remove the EGR valve and check for rubbles. Clear them and reinstall. If the problem is still not fixed, block the EGR port and try to start the engine. If the engine starts, then then the EGR valve is stuck open which needs replacement.
  • If the engine restarts when you unplug the PCM controlled EGR valve, then there can be a wiring problem, or a short which is holding the solenoid open. View the EGR position with the help of a scan tool on the position of data stream while they key is on and the engine is running. Compare the position of the EGR. If the reading is normal, then there can be an irregular problem. Check the EGR Sensor Signal Circuit for A Short to the 5 Volt Reference Wire if it shows a high or 5 volt. Repair as desired. You can also check for a good ground to the ground circuit.
  • If there are any opens or short to the ground circuit, repair them immediately. If the engine starts when unplugging the EGR Valve Vacuum Source then the EGR can be very bad. Replace them as preferred.
  • Despite the presence of this code, if your engine starts and runs fine then there can be an opening in the wiring. Carefully check them and resolve the issue. If the wiring burns out, replace with new EGR valve.

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing the P044D Code

  • Failure of the EGR valve
  • Damaged Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
  • Issues with wires
