Is there a problem when my "Service Engine Soon" light appears?
* When your "Service Engine Soon" light illuminates, that is an indication that there is a potential issue with the drivability, electronics or emissions of your engine.

While investigating what triggered the "Service Engine Soon" light, do you recommend any additional services?
* Preventative maintenance should be referenced in your Owner's Manual, and while repairing or having your "Service Engine Soon" light repaired, if your vehicle is due for maintenance, yes. As described in your Owner's Manual, this maintenance will help prevent future issues.

If I don't investigate the problem, will the light turn off by itself?
* Possibly. Sometimes, the triggering device will reset itself thus turning off the "Service Engine Soon" light until that device/sensor is tested by the vehicle's on-board computer again. If it fails the test again, the "Service Engine Soon" light will illuminate once again. Some devices/sensors when tested and failed will illuminate the "Service Engine Soon" light, and it will not go out until correct service work is performed.

If I ignore the light, will there be consequences?
* General Motors has designed the vehicle to inform its driver if there is an issue with certain devices/sensors that affect the drivability/emissions. If this is ignored, there is a possibility that the drivability will suffer, fuel economy will be decreased or the emissions will be increased. Do not ignore the "Service Engine Soon" light.

Is it possible for my vehicle to pass an emissions test if the "Service Engine Soon" light is on?
* No. When state and local officials perform certified emissions tests, one of the first steps in the process is to inspect for an illuminated "Service Engine Soon" light. If it is on, it will automatically fail the test.

Does the "Service Engine Soon" light tell me when my vehicle needs a tune-up?
* No. The "Service Engine Soon" light is related to engine emissions and drivability conditions. Please refer to your Owner's Manual maintenance schedule for information pertaining to tune-up time intervals.

UF303 - Coils and Water Don't Mix!
On some GM models (4.2 inline 6 cyl. LL8 VIN code S - PRO LL8), water intrusion will cause premature failure of the coil and spark plugs- it's not a coil problem!
Signs of Premature Failure
If a customer complains of a rough idle and/or the MIL/SES light flashes on after a rain shower or car wash, this may indicate water intrusion.
Check for possible DTC codes P0300 through P0306 and inspect the coils and spark plugs. If upon inspection of the coils, a white chalk-like build-up on the inside and/or outside of the spark plug boots is detected, the coils have been damaged and must be replaced-Standard hi-quality UF303 coils should be installed. It is also advised that the spark plugs be replaced.
The Remedy
Water can seep past the engine cam cover and collect below the coils in the spark plug wells of the cylinder head resulting in a possible misfire. To prevent this condition from reoccurring, the AIP seal must be replaced with a replacement seal that redirects the water away from the engine cam cover.

The ignition coil converts a low voltage current to high voltage energy that is delivered to the spark plug to ignite the air/fuel mixture within the cylinder. A coil-on-plug is designed to perform the functions of both the ignition coil which creates the spark energy, and the spark plug wire set that is designed to contain and deliver the high voltage energy to the spark plug. Standard and Intermotor Coil-on-Plug assemblies are engineered and tested to meet or exceed OE standards for spark energy, impedance, and durability.
A coil-on-plug is designed to perform the functions of the ignition coil (creating the spark energy) and the spark plug wire set (containing and delivering the high voltage energy to the spark plug). We performed an extensive engineering analysis of OE DG500 and DG508 to Standard. The engineers measured winding resistance, inductance and output voltage, spark, energy, waveform peak voltage and ringing, as well as a complete physical and sectioned comparison to OE.
The Findings
Standard Ignition Coils look, fit and perform like the original they replace with 100% end of the line production testing. The Standardcoils also provide an improved secondary winding design (additional winding bays) that helps prevent internal arcing and high-voltage breakdown.
* The Standard coils tested 3.7% higher than OE in output voltage.
* The Standard coils were equal to OE in spark energy.
* In waveform testing, Standard coils’ peak output voltage was about 1000 volts higher than OE.
* The Standard coils had a longer spark duration than the OE, resulting in more energy supplied to the spark plugs.
* The Standard coils match or exceed the OE coils in all categories and are an excellent replacement exceeding the OE performance.
