Error Code P0989: What It Means & What To Do?

OBD Code P0989 - Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch "E" Circuit Low

<<See All OBD Codes

This P0989 code is also defined as Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch "E" Circuit. The Transmission Fluid Pressure Solenoid lets the PCM or TCM use hydraulic fluid in order to engage the clutches in the transmission so that gears shift smoothly while driving. When the PCM or TCM is able to pick up an issue with the electrical circuit to or from this solenoid, it will proceed and set OBD-II code P0989.

Learn More About OBD Error Code P0989

This is a generic trouble code which is set upon detecting an abnormality with the transmission fluid pressure sensor “E”. The “E” is the region a region of the circuit and not any component. In the hydraulic pressure system, the sensor key is a very important component. The Powertrain Control Module or PCM will calculate the ideal hydraulic pressure based on the performance as well as the operations including engine speed, vehicle speed, as well as throttle position. The pressure control solenoids control the hydraulic pressure. When the PCM notices any discrepancy between the fluid pressure level and the required level it will set P0989 code.

What causes this problem with the Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch "E" Circuit Low?

  • Voltage in the signal circuit to the TFPS sensor is shorted
  • Short to ground in the TFPD sensor signal circuit
  • PCM has failed

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0989

If you want to easily diagnose this P06AC fault code, then all you have to do is to follow the steps which are mentioned below:

Start off by getting your vehicles TSB and match the symptoms as well as the code. The TSBs can serve as a solid guide while in the diagnosis procedure. If you have more than one code present, it’s time to sort them out as they could be contributing to the P0989 code to set. If there are multiple pressure sensor/switch codes set, then you will have to begin with the power related fault codes first. Using the TSB locate the Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch (TFPS) of your vehicle. They may be attached to the side of the valve body inside the transmission or screwed into the side of the transmission case/body itself. Visually inspect the connectors and wiring for any damages, repair them accordingly. Damages include rubbing, scarping, burned wires, bare wires etc. To inspect the terminals of the connectors, pull them apart and inspect them carefully. Be observant of any burning or corrosion implied by green tint. Use the electrical contact cleaner along with a plastic bristle brush and clean the terminals. All the wiring and connectors that aren’t beyond repair will have to be replaced. Now clear the code and see if it resets, if it doesn't then your issue was with the connectors and wiring. However in case the code has set again then you will have to continue diagnosis by testing the TFPS sensor and associated circuits.

Turn off key and disconnect the electrical connector present at the TFPS sensor. The black lead of the DVOM will go to the ground/ low reference terminal at the TFPS sensor wiring harness connector and the red lead to the signal terminal at the TFPS sensor wiring harness connector. With the key on and engine off refer manufacturers specs and see the reading. It should be either 12v or 5v. Wiggling the connections will help you see if it’s a loose connections, note of the readings change. IN case the voltage is incorrect then repair the power or ground wire or replace the PCM/TCM. If the test is passed then connect one lead of the DVOM to the signal terminal present at the TFPS sensor and the other to the ground/low reference terminal at the sensor. Referring the specifications by the manufacturer on resistance, test the resistance to pressure when there’s no pressure applied to it. Again wiggle the connector at the TFPS sensor/switch while monitoring the resistance closely. If the DVOM readings aren’t correct then replace the TFPS.

If all prior tests have passed and the P0989 code still flashes then the problem may be a failed TFPS sensor. You will not be able to rule out a failed PCM/TCM until the TFPS sensor is replace, same goes for any internal transmission malfunctions. The PCM/TCm will have to reprogrammed if they are going to be replaced. If you need help, seek assistance from tatined automotive diagnosticians only.
