P0988 - OBD Trouble Code
OBD Code P0988 - Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch "E" Circuit Range/Performance
The OBD-II trouble code P0988 is defined as Transmission Fluid
Pressure Sensor/Switch "E" Circuit. In your vehicle the job of the
transmission fluid pressure solenoid is to allow the Powertrain Control Module
or the PCM or the Transmission Control Module or TCM to use hydraulic fuel in
order to engage the clutches in the transmission. This will hence allow
smoother shifting between gears while driving. When the PCM or TCM detects a
problem with the electrical circuit going to and from this solenoid it will set
P0988 code and the check engine light will go on.
Learn More About OBD Error Code P0988
It is the responsibility of the TCM or Transmission Control Module to monitor the transmission fluid pressure sensor/switch signal. If the TCM notices that the Transmission Fluid Pressure sensor/switch is not working as per manufacturer's requirements it will set P0988 code.
What causes this problem with the Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch "E" Circuit Range/Performance?
- The signal circuit to the TFPS sensor is open
- The signal circuit to the TFPS sensor shows short to voltage
- The signal circuit to the TFPS sensor is short to ground
- The TFPS Sensor has failed
- Issue with the Internal mechanical transmission
- Failure of the PCM

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0988
It is essential to diagnose this fault code. Here are some steps which a mechanic should follow for diagnosing the problem that triggered a P0988 code to be stored:
Start off by checking your technical
service bulletins or TSB of your vehicle, they will provide you with
information that will help you throughout the diagnosis procedure. You have
multiple codes set, in such a case start off with diagnosing the power related
fault code first and all the other codes as they may result in the P0988 code
setting.
Now, locate the Transmission fluid
Pressure Sensor/Switch (TFPS), it is usually attached to the side of the valve
body inside the transmission, you may also find it screwed into the side of the
transmission case/body itself depending on your vehicle. Visually inspect the
connectors and wiring once you have successfully located the transmission fluid
pressure sensor/switch. Look carefully for any damages, like scrabing, rubbing,
bare wires or burn spots, you may also find melted plastic. Pull all the
connectors apart and inspect the terminals inside it, note if they are burned
or have green tint on them. This will be indicative of corrosion, especially if
they are attached outside the case of the transmission. Using electrical
contact cleaner along with a plastic bristle brush and clean the terminals if
needed, make sure they are completely dry before applying electrical grease
where the terminals come in contact. It’s time to clear the diagnostic codes to
see if the P0988 code returns. If it doesn’t then it was definitely the
connections that were the problem.
If the code has returned it is time
to test the TFPS sensor andthe circuits associated with it. Turn off the key
and disconnect the electrical connector at the TFPS sensor, now connect the
digital volt ohmmeter or DVOM black lead to the ground or the low reference
terminal at the TFPS wiring harness connector. The red lead of the DVOM has to
be connected to the signal terminal at the TFPS sensor wiring harness
connector. Now, turn on the key and off the engine, refer manufacturers
specifications, the reading should be 12 or 5 volts. Wiggle the connections and
see if there’s any change, if the voltage is not as the manufacturers
prescribed range then you will have to repair the power or ground wire. You may
have to replace the PCM/TCM as well if needed. If the previous test was passed,
then connect one lead of the DVOM to the signal terminal present at the TFPS
sensor and the other to the ground/low reference terminal at the sensor. Refer
the manufacturer's specification on the resistance of the sensor, and test the
resistance pressure when there’s no pressure applied to it, you will have to
wiggle the connector at the TFPS while monitoring the resistance. If you have
found that the readings aren’t as needed then replace the TFPS. If all the
tests have passed till now but the code is still setting, then the issue most
likely is with a failed TFPS sensor. You may want to also rule out a
malfunction of the PCM/TCM as well as the internal transmission, but this can
only happen once the TFPS sensor has been replaced. Seek assistance from a
trained automotive diagnostician if needed just to be sure. The PCM/TCM will
have to be programmed or calibrated to your vehicle for it to be installed and
work correctly.
