OBD Code P0987 - Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch "E" Circuit

<<See All OBD Codes

If your vehicle has the P0987 code set, don’t panic it’s a generic powertrain code, related to the transmission (including pressure faults as well as failed sensors). For the specific P0987 code, the Engine control module or the ECM module has found an issue with the transmission fluid pressure sensor/switch present in the E circuit. Upon detecting such a fault the ECM will set this OBD error.

Learn More About OBD Error Code P0987

The gear changing requires a few steps and modules to work in sync. The Transmission Fluid Pressure Solenoid lets the Powertrain control module (PCM) or the Transmission Control Module or TCM to apply hydraulic fluid pressure in order to engage the clutches in the transmission. This allows for smoother shifting during drive on road. The PCM or TCM may pick up issues with the electrical circuit to or from this specific solenoid, in such a case the P0987 code will be set and the check engine light will turn on.

What causes this problem with the Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch "E" Circuit?

  • Signal circuit to the TFPS sensor is open
  • The signal circuit to the TFPS sensor have a short to voltage
  • The signal circuit to the TFPS sensor have a short to ground
  • Failure of the TFPS Sensor due to Internal mechanical transmission problem
  • Malfunction of the PCM module

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0987

Here are some steps which you should follow in order to diagnose this P0987 fault code:

Get hold of your vehicles technical service bulletins/ TSB for your vehicle, based on the make, model, year of manufacture and engine. Match the symptoms and the P0897 code and get all the information about diagnosis that you can. This will be extremely helpful during diagnosis. Begin your diagnosis with checking the power related fault codes first, or with multiple code diagnosis. This is so that you can rule out other power related issues before trying to resolve the code in question.

Locate the Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch (TFPS), it will typically be attached to the side of the valve body inside the transmission. You may find it screwed into the side of the transmission case/body too, depending on your vehicle. Once you have confirmed its location start with visually inspecting the connectors and wiring for any damages like scraping, rubbing, presence of melted plastic or burn spots, or even bare wires. These will all have to be repaired or replaced as per need. Now, pull the connector apart and thoroughly inspect all the terminals ie the metal parts present inside the connector, again you are looking for damages like burning or green tint, which is indicative of corrosion. Using an electrical contact cleaner and a simple plastic bristle brush clean the terminals and see if that has helped, otherwise you will have to replace them. Wait for them to dry before applying electrical grease where the terminals come in contact. Now use your scan tool to clear all the trouble codes set, and see if the P0987 code returns, if it doesn’t then you have solved the issue, which was stemming mainly from the connections. If it resets, then continue the diagnostics.

It’s time to proceed on to testing the TFPS sensor and the circuits associated with it. Turn off the key and disconnect the electrical connector present at the TFPS sensor, now connect the black lead of the DVOM to the ground or low reference terminal at the TFPS sensor wiring harness connector. The red lead will go to the signal terminal at the TFPS sensor wiring harness connector. Now turn the key on and engine off. The voltmeter should typically read either 12 or 5 volts, but you will have to check your manufacturer's specifications.Wiggle the connections and see if there’s a change in the reading. If there’s an incorrect voltage, you will have to repair the power or ground wire ore replace the PCM/TCM. If the test was passed, then you will have to connect one lead of the DVOM to the signal terminal at the TFPS sensor and the other to the ground/low reference termal at the sensor. Again, refer the manufacturer's specifications for the resistance required and wiggle the connector while monitoring the resistance at the TFPS. If the readings aren’t within the prescribed manufacturers then you will have to replace the TFPS.

In case all the tests have been clear but the code persists, then it may be due to a failed TFPS sensor. You will not be able to rule out a failure of the TCM/PCM or even the internal transmission malfunctions until the TFPS is replaced. At any point if you’re not confident with the diagnosis, take help from a trained mechanic or automotive diagnostician. In case you have to replace the PCM/TCM remember they will have to be reprogrammed for your vehicle.
