Error Code P0711: What It Means & What To Do?

What causes the P0711 error code to be stored in your vehicle? This is a general type of error code which includes sensor and pressure failures. It means the ECM or PCM has identified an error in the TFT circuit.

The PCM uses the signal that is produced by the transmission fluid temperature sensor so as to define shift points, line pressure and torque converter clutch. TFT sensor is most likely to accept a reference voltage from the PCM which differs from its internal resistance in relation to TFT so that it could send a return voltage signal to the PCM. The internal resistance of the sensor is inversely proportional to the oil temperature where the TFT sensor signal voltage will go down when the transmission fluid temperature goes up.

What causes this problem with the Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance?

• Defective transmission fluid temperature sensor.

1. Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor - Look for damages or leaks in the sensor. If you find so, replace them immediately.

It is essential to diagnose this fault code. Here are some steps which a mechanic should follow for diagnosing the problem that triggered a P0711 code to be stored:

• Before you visually inspect your components look for loose connections, defective wires etc. if there is damage, repair and clear the codes as necessary.
• Check for proper TSB regarding the issue. You have to move forward for the diagnosis. This is a general procedure and varies between vehicles. You can also refer to the diagnostic flow chart of the manufacturer.
• With the help of scan tool do some preliminary test and monitor the sensor. Separate the TFT sensor and the value will drop to low. Now join a jumper wire to the terminal. If the connection is high, conditions are good and the PCM will identify the input. Problem arises due to the sensor.
• Test the sensor by separating the TFT sensor connector. Now measure the resistance between terminals by using DVOM. Start and see the meter value. As the engine warms up, the value will decrease.
• If the engine temperature increases but resistance of TFT also increases, the faulty sensor must be replaced. Check the circuit on the reference voltage side. Check for 5 voltage reference with the DVOM from the PCM on at least one of TFT terminals. If there is no signal, turn off ignition, connect to meter.
• If the meter reads out of limits, It has to be repaired. If there is numeric value, continuity is there. If everything is good, look for 5 volts from the PCM at the reference voltage terminal.
• If there is no 5 volts, then the PCM is faulty. Check for ground circuit by connecting it to meter set to ohms. If there is out of limit, there is open circuit and it has to be fixed. If there is numeric value, you will find continuity.
• Finally check for ground circuit in the PCM by fixing one-meter lead to the PCM ground and chassis. If there is out of limit, there is open circuit which needs repair. Else there will be problem with transmission. It is true is if the codes are set along the other transmission codes.
