When does your vehicle show the error code P0710? This is a general type of voltage issue related to transmission fluid temperature sensor. As the code triggers, the transmission control unit reads the voltage that is outside the manufacturer’s parameters. It means the sensor is faulty.

The TFT sensor informs the powertrain control module the temperature of the fluid in the transmission. If there is an incorrect signal then the P0710 code will be set.

It is essential to diagnose this fault code. Here are some steps which a mechanic should follow for diagnosing the problem that triggered a P0710 code to be stored:

• Visually inspect the transmission fluid temperature sensor and its wires. See if there are any damaged wires or loose connections and repair them as needed.
• Check for TSB for this issue, else you have to perform step by step diagnosis. In order to properly diagnose you have to see the diagnostic flow chart mentioned by the manufacturer.
• Carry out a preliminary test. Use a scan tool to monitor the a few parameters. Separate the TFT sensor. Now you have to connect jumper wires across them. If the scan tool shows high temperature, the connections are good and can recognize the input.
• The main problem lies with the sensor and so test the sensor. Measure the resistance between the terminals with DVOM. Start the engine and as it warms, the value should decrease. If the temperature increase whereas the TFT resistance does not decrease, then component has to be replaced.
• Check for reference signal and if it’s not presents connect it to the meter on the PCM. You will find an open circuit if the meter reads out of limits between the PCM and the sensor and it needs repair.
• If there is a numeric value in the meter, it is good. Check for 5 volts from the PCM at reference voltage terminal, if not so, the PCM is fault. Check for proper ground and connect it to the meter between transmission fluid temperature sensor and the ground terminal on the PCM.
• You will find an open circuit if the meter reads out of limit. Finally check for proper ground by attaching the PCM ground terminal to the chassis ground. If it reads out of limit, then there will be an opening in the circuit and it needs to be repaired.
• If everything is fine and still error occurs, there can be a problem with the transmission. This is especially true as the fluid temperature codes are set with other transmission codes.
