P0712 OBD Error Code: Problem & Solutions

In order to define shift points, line pressure and torque converter clutch, the transmission fluid temperature sensor produces a signal where the PCM uses it. The sensor is available in the transmission oil pan which receives a reference voltage from the PCM. The internal resistance keeps changing in relation to TFT to send a return voltage signal to the PCM. TFT sensors are negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistor which means the internal resistance of the sensor is inversely proportional to the oil temperature.

It is essential to diagnose this fault code. Here are some steps which a mechanic should follow for diagnosing the problem that triggered a P0712 code to be stored:

• Visually examine the transmission fluid temperature sensor and its wires. See if there are any damaged wires and repair them as needed.
• Check your TSB for this issue, else you have to perform step by step diagnosis process. In order to properly diagnose you have to use the diagnostic flow chart specified by the manufacturer.
• Carry out a preliminary test. Using a scan tool monitor few parameters. Now separate the TFT sensor and connect jumper wires across them. If the scan tool shows high temperature, then the connections are good and they can recognize the input.
• The main problem is with the sensor and so tests the sensor. Check the resistance between the terminals with DVOM. Start the engine and the value should decrease and as it warms. If the temperature increase and the TFT resistance also increases, then component has to be changed.
• Check for reference signal and if it’s not available connect it to the meter on the PCM. You will find an opening if the meter reads out of limits between the PCM and the sensor which needs repair.
• If there is a numeric value in the meter, then good. Check for 5 volts from the PCM at reference voltage terminal, if not so, the PCM is defective. Check for proper ground circuit and connect it to the meter between transmission fluid temperature sensor and the ground terminal.
• An opening will be present if the meter reads out of limit. Finally examine for proper ground by fixing the PCM ground terminal to the chassis ground. If it reads out of limit, then there will be an opening and it needs repair.
• If everything is fine, then there can be a problem with the transmission. This is especially real as the fluid temperature codes are set with other transmission codes.

Common mistakes when diagnosing the P0712 code
