P06BF - OBD Trouble Code
OBD Code P06BF - Cylinder 7 Glow Plug Circuit Range/Performance
The
glow plug in diesel engine vehicles preheats the cylinder before the engine is
started by us. The Powertrain Control Module or PCM will detect any malfunction
of cylinder 7 and set code P06BF.
Learn More About OBD Error Code P06BF
The
glow plug system assists in providing the heat to begin combustion in cold
temperatures. It holds a significant position especially for vehicles running
in cold temperatures. These plugs as heated before and during the cranking.
They also continue to heat during the initial stages of engine operation. These
plugs are turned On by the Engine Control Module (ECM), it does so by
monitoring the coolant temperature and glow plug voltage. This glow plug system
has eight individual supply circuits between the controller and glow plugs. If
the ECM notices that the feedback voltage from the controller is not within
range, then the OBD code P06BF is set.

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P06BF
Here
are some steps which you should follow in order to diagnose this P06BF fault
code:
Procure
a diagnostic scanner and DVOM as your tools for the diagnosis. You will need
information sources too, these include a reliable vehicle information source,
the applicable technical service bulletins (TSB). From them retrieve all the
diagnostic flowcharts, wiring diagrams, connector face views, connector pinout
charts, component locations, and component testing procedures/specifications.
Next,
start your visual inspection of the glow plug and glow plug control wiring and
connectors. Find your vehicle's diagnostic port and connect the scanner to
retrieve all codes stored and freeze frame the data. Make note of them also,
and ensure they’re in order. Now take your car on a test-drive. Keep driving
till either one happens; the code is reset, or the PCM enters readiness mode.
In case of the latter, it will be confirmation that the code is intermittent
and the issue will have to unfortunately worsen before correct diagnosis can be
made. If the former happens continue on with diagnosis. Tests the glow plugs by
applying battery voltage, if it glows bright red then it’s fine. If it doesn’t
heat up, use the DVOM to test it to see if it meets the manufacturers
specifications for resistance. Ensure full safety while doing this, you may
burn yourself or even cause a fire.
If
the glow plug is working correctly use the scanner to activate the glow plug
timer, and with the help of DVOM test for battery voltage and ground at the
glow plug connector. Upon your findings of no voltage presence you will have to
test the power supply for the glow plug timer or glow plug controller. Proceed
to testing all related fuses and relays, as per manufacturer recommendations.
Test them with the circuit loaded. If you’re able to successfully conclude that
all relays and fuses and functioning as required then use the DVOM to test
output voltage at the glow plug timer or PCM (depending on where it originates
from). suspect an open or shorted circuit if voltage is present, and
accordingly resolve the issue. There is a misconception that P06BF can’t be
caused by a faulty glow plug, be assured that that is completely false. A
malfunctioning glow plug may cause variation in the control circuit, which
results in attempting to diagnose the wrong cylinder. It is crucial you know
the correct faulty cylinder for diagnosis to be successful.
Common mistakes when
diagnosing the P06BF Code
- Glow
plug control module has stopped to perform
- Glow plug has failed
- Glow plug wiring harness fails to work
