P06BD OBD Error Code: Problem & Solutions
OBD Code P06BD - Cylinder 5 Glow Plug Circuit Range/Performance
In
your diesel vehicle the cylinder is preheated before the engine is started,
this is the job of the glow plug. IN case the Powertrain control module or the
PCM module notices any issues with the glow plug for cylinder five, it will set
P06BD code.
Learn More About OBD Error Code P06BD
The
whole glow plug system is responsible to assist in providing heat required for
the combustion of engine to begin. This is even more important for vehicles
functioning in cold weather conditions. This happens when the glow plugs heat
before and during the cranking of the engine. It continues on during the
initial operation of the engine as well. The ECM or Engine Control Module is
responsible for switching the glow plug on, by monitoring need based on the
coolant temperature and glow plug voltage. This glow plug voltage system is
rather complex, consisting of eight individual glow plug supply circuits. These
run between the glow plugs and the controller. If the ECM receives a feedback
voltage from the controllers that is not within the desired range, it will
proceed to set error code P06BD.

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P06BD
To
diagnose the P06BD error code you will first need to get hold of a diagnostic
scanner, a DVOM, your vehicles Technical Service Bulletins, and a reliable
vehicle information source provided by the manufacturer along with diagnostic
flowcharts, wiring diagrams, connector pinout charts and component locations
and texting procedures/specifications. Once you have all this handy follow the
diagnostics steps below:
Start
with a visual inspection of the glow plus and the glow plug control wiring,
connectors. Make note of any apparent damages to them and repair them
accordingly or even replace if need be. Connect your scanner to the vehicles
diagnostic port to retrieve all the codes stored in it. Freeze frame the data
and also make note of them in order for future reference. Now you have to rule
out if the code is intermittent or requires further diagnosis, for this simply
take your vehicle for a test drive and wait to see if the code resets, or the
PCM goes into readiness mode. If the latter happens, it means it’s an
intermittent issue, and can be correctly diagnosed after the condition worsens.
However, if the code is reset, continue diagnosis by testing the glow plugs.
To
do this, remove them and apply battery voltage, if the glow plug glows brightly
in red colour it’s in functioning capacity. But if you notice that it doesn’t
heat up you will have to test it further with a DVOM and rule out if it truly
doesn't meet the manufacturers resistance specifications.
This
step is rather dangerous, so be careful not to burn yourself or cause a fire.
If they seem to be working properly, with the help of a scanner try to activate
the glow plug timer. Use the DVOM to test for battery voltage and ground at the
glow plug connector. If you find that there’s no voltage found then test the
power supply for the glow plug timer/ glow plug controller. All related fuses
will also have to be tested, including relays as per manufacturers recommendations.
When testing the system fuses and fusible links ensure that the circuit is
loaded to avoid any confusion.
If
you are able to conclude the fuses and relays to be functional you can proceed
to using the DVOM for testing the output voltage at the glow plug timer or PCM
depending on where it originates. If you are able to detect voltage, it’s
surely an open or shorted circuit, fix that issue.
Sometimes
it is presumed that the P06BD being a control circuit code can’t be caused by a
faulty glow plug. But don't be fooled, a bad glow plug can cause disparity in
the control circuit, which can result in such a code trying to diagnose issue
with the incorrect cylinder. So be mindful and resolve issue with the glow plug
first and be sure which cylinder you are supposed to be addressing during
diagnosis.
Common mistakes when
diagnosing the P06BD Code
- Glow
plug control module fails to perform
- Glow plug malfunction
- Glow plug wiring harness not functional
