Guide To P06BE OBD Error Code Solutions
OBD Code P06BE - Cylinder 6 Glow Plug Circuit Range/Performance
In
all diesel engine vehicles, there’s a glow plug that preheats the cylinder
prior to starting of the engine. IN case the Powertrain Control Module or the
PCM module is able to detect malfunction in the glow plug cylinder six, it will
set OBD error code P06BE.
Learn More About OBD Error Code P06BE
The
glow plug system assists in providing the heat needed to begin the combustion
especially during cold temperatures of engine. In-order to do this, the glow
plugs are heated before and during the cranking of the engine. They are also
heated during the initial engine operation. It is the Engine Control Module or
the ECM that controls the glow plug, by switching it on considering the coolant
temperature and voltage of the plug. There are eight individual glow plug
supply circuits in the glow plug system, these run between the controller and
the glow plugs. When the ECM received a faulty feedback voltage from the
controller, it sets P06BE code.

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P06BE
Following
are some basic steps to diagnose the P06BE fault code:
First
and foremost, gather all the tools and reference material you will need for the
diagnosis of this error code, here’s a list of the items:
- Vehicle
information source
- Technical
service bulletin or TSB
- Diagrams
and charts of connectors, components, testing procedures for various
components, technical specifications
- DVOM
- Diagnostic
scanner
Now, start by doing a visual inspection of all the glow plugs and their control wiring and connectors. Connect the scanner diagnostic scanner to your vehicle's diagnostic port and retrieve all the codes. Freeze frame the data and also make note of them, ensure they’re in order as well. These codes will help you as reference in diagnosis as they progress. Clear all codes now that you have them safely recorded and take your vehicle on a test drive.
Drive
until either of the two will happen:
- PCM
enters readiness mode - In this case, be assured that the code was an
intermittent one, and unfortunately the issue will have to worsen before proper
diagnosis can be made.
- The
code is reset - Continue diagnosis as below:
Test the glow plugs by removing them and applying battery voltage. If it doesn’t heat up then you will have to test it via DVOM to be sure that it doesn't meet the manufacturer's specifications for resistance. While testing be careful to not burn yourself or cause nay fire.
If
the bulb glows bright red in colour, then that means it’s perfectly fine, and
you can now proceed to continue tests. The scanner has to be used to activate
the glow plug timer, and the DVOM to test battery voltage and ground at the
glow plug connector. Upon testing, if you find that no voltage is present, then
test the power supply for this glow plug timer or controller, do this by
testing all fuses and relays. Follow the recommendations by your manufacturer
for clarity. It is best to have a loaded circuit when testing system fuses and
fusible links. This will help in giving the perfect results. If all the fuses
and relays are functioning properly, the DVOM can be used to test output
voltage at the glow plug timer or the PCM as its origin. If there’s voltage
detected then there may as well be an open or shorted circuit, fix the issue
accordingly via repairs or replacements.
Remember
that a malfunctioning glow plug can very well create this error. This happens
because it creates a variation in the control circuit, which leads it to
diagnose the wrong cylinder. This is rather common phenomenon, so ensure that
you are very clear on which cylinder to diagnose and repair.
Common mistakes when
diagnosing the P06BE Code
- Failure
of the whole glow plug control module
- Glow plug seems to have failed
- Glow plug wiring harness ceases to work
