Guide To P0563 OBD Error Code Solutions
OBD Code P0563 - System Voltage High
The OBD Code P0563 is set when the ECM detects an
out of range voltage reading. The Engine Control module of a vehicle receives
power from the battery when the car is off. This allows it to perform certain
functions, one of those is data storage. It assumes that a power supply circuit
is at fault and hence, automatically triggers this OBD error. You will also
notice the ‘Service Engine Soon’ light to switch on as well. The voltage
variation could be due to multiple causes, like the battery, or the alternator
or other components in the starting or charging system.
Learn More about OBD Error Code P0563
Every vehicle charging
system is responsible for maintaining a certain voltage level when the engine
is on. If the ECM observes that the battery voltage drops below 10V, it will
proceed and set code P0563
What causes this problem
with the System Voltage High
Below are some causes to
this error:
- High resistance found in
the cable between the battery and alternator
- The circuit between the
alternator and control module is open or having high resistance
- Unfit alternator
- Failed PCM has failed

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0563
Here are some easy
steps to follow in-order to diagnose this fault code:
- Start by checking the
TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) of your vehicle, for any suggestions from the
manufacturer to resolve this OBD code.
- A faulty alternator is
usually the culprit behind this OBD code. To check this, start the vehicle,
turn on the headlights and the blower fan (high speed). This will help load the
electrical system, now use the DVOM (Digital Volt Ohm Meter) and check voltage at
the battery. The range it should be in is 13.2V to 14.7V. If it is below 12 or
above 15.5, you can diagnose the charging system as the problem maker, with
focus on the alternator. If the voltage is correct, use the scanning tool to
delete all the saved codes and see if error P0563 returns. You can approach a
mechanic too for sorting this out, they will give you a print out of the test
results, and the whole thing won’t cost much.
- If the code doesn’t
return after clearing the data, it must’ve been an intermittent code or form
the history/memory. You can conclude your diagnosis. However, if the code
returns, you will have to inspect the PCM.
- Locate the PCM and start
off by visually inspecting the connector and wiring around it. See if they are
all in good shape, any scraping, rubbing, bare wires, burn spots or melted
plastic should not be there. Now, pull these connectors parts completely and
proceed to inspecting the terminals found inside the connectors. Are they
burned or have a green tint? if yes, that indicates corrosion. You will have to
sort that out using an electrical contact cleaner and a plastic bristle brush.
Once the parts have been cleaned and are dried use electrical grease where the
terminals contact.
- Clear the codes once
again and wait to see if the P0563 code returns. If it doesn’t then it was the
connections that were your problem. If the code returns, you’ll have to now
check the voltages going to the PCM.For this, you will have to disconnect the
negative battery cable at the battery, and also the disconnect the harness
going to the PCM. Now, reconnect the battery cable, and turn on the ignition
switch. Use the DVOM and test the ignition feed circuit of the PCM (Red lead to
the PCM ignition feed, and black lead to a solid ground).
- Observe the battery
volts, if they are less then repair the wiring going from PCM all the way to
the ignition switch, however if that’s okay, you’ll have to ensure the ground
is good at the PCM. For this connect a test light of 12V battery red terminal i.e.
positive and touch the other end of this light to the ground circuit of the PCM
ignition feed. If the light doesn’t light up, then the circuit is faulty. If it
lights up, shake the wiring harness going to the PCM and notice if the light
flickers. A flickering light is indicative of a loose connection.
- If all prior tests have
passed, but the error code persists to come, then it would have to be a failed
PCM causing it. If you’re not confident about your conclusion, approach a
professional automotive diagnostician and have your PCM installed. This
requires it to be programmed to your specific vehicle, so ensure your mechanic
has experience in PCM installation.
Common Mistakes When
Diagnosing the P0563 Code
The tricky part of this
OBD code is to rule out the source of problem. Often times the battery is
replaced, when it’s not needed. Or even the PCM is concluded as faulty. This
can turn out to be very expensive. It’s mostly the alternator that’s the issue,
and hence it’s important to avoid this mistake.
