P0562 OBD Error Code: Problem & Solutions

OBD Code P0562 - System Voltage Low

<<See All OBD Codes

When the PCM (powertrain control module) of a vehicle detects voltage below requested it sets the error code P0562. If the vehicle voltage level goes below 10 volts for sixty seconds or more while at idle, the PCM will proceed to store this code.

Learn More about OBD Error Code P0562

Every vehicle has a charging system, this system is responsible for maintaining a normal vehicle voltage level. The range of which is 14.1 to 14.4 volts DC at idle, with the headlights turned off. When the PCM detects the vehicle voltage level of low, it will set the code. This will hence lead to the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) or Check Engine light to light up

What causes this problem with the System Voltage Low

Here’s a list of causes that typically lead to this problem:

  • Poor charging system grounds (may be more than one)
  • Alternator is defective
  • Significant drain in the battery
  • Defect in the voltage regulator
  • Flawed wiring or connector(s) to the alternator
  • Faulty wiring connecting the alternator to the PCM
  • Fault in the B+ battery cable running from the alternator to the battery
  • Incompetent battery and/or battery cables
  • Failed PCM (very rare)

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0562

Want to easily diagnose this fault code? then follow the steps mentioned below:

Check your particular vehicles Technical Service Bulletins (TSB)ided the, there may be solutions provided there by the manufacturer.

  • Remember the most common cause of this code is a faulty alternator, so take time out to check the alternator belt. Start with checking the charging system. Turn on your vehicle, and the headlights, the blower fan should be set to high speed in-order to load the electrical system. Pull out your DVOM, and check the voltage at the battery, you’re looking for it to be in the ranges of 13.2V and 14.7V. If you find that the voltage is below 12V or above 15.5V confidently diagnose the charging system, with emphasis on the alternator. If you’re still unsure have it checked by a professional mechanic for clarity. They will do it for a nominal price and also give you a printout of the results, and you will get the satisfaction of correct diagnosis.
  • If you find that the voltage was within the range, then use your scan tool and clear all the diagnostic trouble codes from the memory. Wait and see if the code returns, if it doesn't then you can rule out easily that the code was either intermittent or is a history/memory code and you don’t require to continue diagnosis. However, if the error code returns you will have to now locate the PCM and check it for issues.
  • After locating the PCM first visually inspect the connectors and wiring. Look for any symptoms of wear out, like rubbing, bare wires, scaping, burn spots or melted plastic. Now, pull all the connectors apart and cautiously inspect the terminals inside the connectors, terminals are all the metal parts you may see. Inspect them too for any burning or green tint. If you do find any, then you’ll have to clean it with electrical contact cleaner and a bristle brush. Once the parts are dry, you can safely apply electrical grease where the terminals come into contact. Now, clear the diagnostic codes again from the memory, using the same scan tool, and wait to see if the code returns back. If it doesn’t then you can conclude that the connections were causing the problem. In case the P0562 code returns, you’ll have to delve deeper into the PCM and check its voltage.
  • For this you will need to disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery, then disconnect the harness going to the PCM. Now, reconnect the battery cable and turn on the ignition switch. Using the DVOM, you will have to test the PCM ignition feed circuit (Red lead goes to the PCM ignition feed circuit, while the black lead goes to a good ground). Note if the battery volts on this circuit are less, is so, repair the wiring the PCM to the ignition switch. If they’re fine, then ensure you have a good ground at the PCM. You can connect a test light to 12V battery positive i.e. red terminal and connect the other end of the test light to the ground circuit which is going to the PCM ignition feed circuit ground. If the test light doesn’t light up, it will understand that the problem is the circuit. If it lights up, shake the wiring harness going to the PCM and note if the light flickers. This would indicate an unstable connection.
  • Even after passing all the other tests, you continue to see the OBD error P0562, then it’s most likely because of a failed PCM, even though it’s highly unlikely in such OBD errors. If you're not sure, you can seek guidance from a professional automotive diagnostician, who has plenty experience in solving OBD codes. For correct installation the PCMs require to be programmed and calibrated to your vehicle, hence the help of a professional will be important.

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing the P0562 Code

A rushed misdiagnosis of the error code P0562 is the most common mistake committed while trying to diagnose this error. It’s mostly assumed that the issue is with the faulty battery or the starter. But neither will keep the code from storing and won't solve the issue of engine stalling and other symptoms associated with this OBD error.
