P0414 - OBD Trouble Code
OBD Code P0414 - Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve A Circuit Shorted
If you are experiencing noise from under the car’s hood with occasional engine stalling and rich engine conditions and the PCM storing OBD code P0414 error in the system, it is a clear indication of a problematic air injection system.
OBD
code P0414 means Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve A Circuit
Shorted
Learn More About OBD Error Code P0414
Error
code P0414 means that the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected a short
in a secondary air injection (SAI) system switching valve circuit. A shorted
circuit could mean that the affected circuit has come into contact with an
unexpected voltage signal or a ground. A shorted circuit will usually result in
a blown fuse.
The
PCM receives voltage input signals from pressure sensors to monitor
fluctuations in SAI system pressure. When appropriate conditions are met, the
PCM electronically opens the necessary valves and allows secondary air to be
pumped into the exhaust system. The PCM monitors SAI pressure sensors and
activates the pump when required in vehicles that are equipped with electric
pumps. If the PCM detects a voltage input signal from the SAI switching valve
(designated as A) circuit that is indicative of a short (to voltage or ground),
a code P0414 will be stored and a malfunction indicator lamp may be
illuminated.
What causes this problem with
the Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve A Circuit Shorted?
- Air
pump failure
- Air
bypass solenoid wiring harness open or short
- Corroded
or damaged connection
- Check valve failure allowing moisture in, which freezes in cold weather
- Cracked or damaged air injection hose

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0414
Here
are some steps which you should follow in order to diagnose this fault code:
- The
first step in diagnosing the P0414 code is to connect an OBD II scanner to the
car’s port (usually found under the dash on the driver’s side).
- The
stored code or codes will be read, and then cleared. The technician will then
test drive the vehicle to see if the code resets, as well as to duplicate any
symptoms the driver mentioned.
- The
next step is to check the condition of the air injection hoses or lines (some
cars use steel lines, while others use rubber hoses).
- Next,
the technician will inspect the one-way check valves on the pump. If air moves
both ways, then the valve is bad and must be replaced. In some instances, this
is all that is needed. However, if sufficient moisture has entered the pump,
replacing it as well may be necessary.
- If
the check valves test well, then the mechanic will need to check the wiring
harness for signs of damage, as well as the connections for corrosion.
Common Mistakes When Diagnosing the P0414 Code
It
is important to follow all the diagnostic steps properly. One of the most
common mistakes made here is assuming that the pump has failed and replacing it
without checking the wiring harness for damage or the connections for
corrosion. Because of its location, it is possible for the wiring harness to be
burned by hot exhaust gases.
