P0410 - OBD Trouble Code
OBD Code P0410 - Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction
Is your car’s Check Engine Light On? Do you
hear noise coming from under the hood? Are you experiencing lean or rich engine
conditions? All these can be due to a problem with the air injector system and
can thus store OBD code P0410 in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
Learn More About OBD Error Code P0410
Error
Code P0410 means that there is a problem with the car’s emissions system, and
most probably with the air pump. The air pump sends air to the exhaust to
decrease the emissions. The air from the outside and pumped into the one-way
check valves to every bank of the exhaust.
This
code is usually caused by air pump pressure escaping to the outside if any of
the air pipes that lead to the combustion valve is damaged or lodged after
changing the spark plug. Most of the time, this code is triggered when one-way
check valve has been damaged or has allowed water (which naturally happens in
the exhaust) back into the pump. During colder seasons, particularly in seasons
with higher humidity, water can be excessive and may partially fill the air
pump and freeze there. Obviously, if the PCM triggers the pump on, the pump
will not turn, and this results to overloading of the circuit and “pop” the
fuse.
What causes this problem with
the Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction?
- Faulty
air pump check valves
- Defective
vacuum lines or air control solenoids
- Defective
air pump or air pump relay
- Restricted
system or system plugged with carbon
- Water
collected and accumulated in the air pump
- Frozen or corroded pump
- Blown air pump fuse caused by freezing
Replace/Repair These Parts To Fix OBD Code P0410
- Air Injection
Pump - Most common problem with this OBD error is with the air pump. Get
it checked and replace with new air pump now!
- Air Control
Valve Relay - The valve relay can also be damaged
causing air intake problems. Replace faulty valve relays. Buy now!
- Air Injection Check Valve - Faulty check valve may lead to water or moisture entering the pump. Thus, if the valve is faulty/damaged, it’s time to replace it now!
- Diagnostic Tools - Quality OBD scanner and tools is required to resolve this OBD issue. Buy new diagnostic tools from us.

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0410
Here
are some steps which you should follow in order to diagnose this fault code:
- Scan
codes and freeze frame data in order to verify the problem and check if the
code is really present.
- Clear
the code and retest the vehicle under similar conditions to see if the error
reappears.
- Inspect
and repair the O2 sensor, if faulty, before checking for problems related to
the emission system.
- Check
the O2 sensor pid on a scanner to see if the sensor reacts when the air
injection pump is activated, the sensor should go to below 150 mv within 3
seconds.
- Replace
the old and underperforming O2 sensor and retest the vehicle for errors.
- Checks
air injection relay for power out of relay if pump does not turn on.
- Checks
the air injection pump for proper resistance between pins of power and ground
and replace the pump, valve and or relay as required.
- If
everything checks out, inspect for the problem with the PCM/ECM and check if it
requires reprogramming or replacement.
Common Mistakes When Diagnosing the P0410 Code
It
is important to evaluate all the components before coming to a conclusion or
early diagnosis to avoid any errors. Following are the most common mistakes
done.
- Not checking for proper intake air flow into the air injection pump before replacing the pump for no air pumping out of it
- Not checking the air injection pump relay for burnt wire connections before replacing a bad air injection pump
