Guide To P0413 OBD Error Code Solutions
OBD Code P0413 - Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve A Circuit Open
Is your car engine stalling? Is there a reduced performance and lack of acceleration? Did you notice Check Engine light illuminated on the dashboard? This may lead to OBD code P0413 getting stored in the Powertrain Control Module thus indicating the problem of Air ignition system.
OBD
Code P0413 means Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve A Circuit Open
Learn More About OBD Error Code P0413
OBD
code P0413 means that the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected a
malfunction in a secondary air injection (SAI) system switching valve circuit.
This particular switching valve has been given the designation A. The A refers
to a particular switching valve in a system that uses multiple switching
valves, or the only valve if there is just one switching valve.
One-way
valves, switching valves, anti-backfire valves, and bypass valves, controlled
by the PCM, are utilized to regulate and distribute air pressure as well as to
protect the SAI pump. The PCM receives voltage input signals from strategically
placed pressure sensors to monitor fluctuations in SAI system pressure. When
the required parameters are reached, the PCM electronically opens the necessary
valves and allows secondary air to be pumped into the exhaust system. Some
vehicles are equipped with SAI systems designed with an electronic pump. In
this type of system, the PCM monitors pressure sensors and activates the pump
when required. If the PCM detects a voltage input signal from the SAI switching
valve (designated as A) that is too low or non-existent, a code P0413 will be
stored and a malfunction indicator lamp may be illuminated.
What causes this problem with
the Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve A Circuit Open?
- Faulty/failed
air injection pump.
- Faulty/failed wiring to and from the pump.
- Faulty/failed air bypass solenoid harness.

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0413
It
is essential to diagnose this fault code. Here are some steps which a mechanic
should follow for diagnosing the problem that triggered a P0413 code to be
stored:
- Scans
codes and freeze frame data in order to verify the problem and check if the
code is really present.
- Clear
the code and retest the vehicle under similar conditions to see if the error
reappears.
- Visually
inspect all the associated wiring for the air injection system and repair as necessary.
- After
clearing the code, a test drive will reveal if the P0413 returns immediately.
- If
it doesn’t, the issue could be intermittent or temperature dependent. If it
does return, a fuse may be blown and your mechanic will check that next.
- If
the fuse is fine, chances are high the pump itself is defective and will need
to be replaced.
- Check
PCM for faults and replace or reprogram as required.
Common Mistakes When Diagnosing the P0413 Code
Sometime
the individual fails to inspect and repair the one-way check valves inserted in
the hoses leading to the exhaust pipe. If the pump is replaced with a still
defective valve, chances are high the pump will fail shortly after.
