Everything About Car's Fuel Door & Components You Need To Know
What Are Fuel Door & Components?
The
fuel filler cap is covered by the fuel door on the vehicle, and it prevents
dirt and other materials from entering the diesel fuel or gas tank. You can
open the little metal door when you fuel up so that you can easily access the
fuel cap. When everything is completed, close everything and keep the fuel away
from the elements outside. When it works, it is neatly designed.
One
of the most neglected parts of your vehicle is the door to the fuel cap. You
can find it as a small tire door either on the left or right side of the
vehicle. If the fuel door doesn’t function the way it was meant to be, then it
will go out of sight and out of mind. The fuel door may not open at all if it is not functioning properly.
Things can even worsen if you can’t open the fuel cap when your vehicle needs
fuel and you have to refill them.
Where Is Fuel Door Located?
You
can find the fuel door on the body usually on one side or another side of the
body and it moves on a hinge. A spring
helps to keep the fuel door open. Some automobiles utilize a cable to open the
fuel door open as you pull a lever that is present inside the vehicle. It works
similar to the hood release cable. This helps to avoid the thieves from
siphoning your gas. Some fanciest automobiles use an electric actuator to lock
as well as unlock the fuel door.
Important Features of Fuel Door & Components
A
fuel door looks pretty different and it complements the aesthetics of the
vehicle. Added to this, it protects the fuel cap. As it provides protection, it
prevents the unnecessary entry off thieves who try to poach the fuel of your
vehicle.
How Do Fuel Door & Components Work?
The
fuel door is a tiny square door on the side of your vehicle. When you open the
door, you’ll find the gas cap. Unscrew the gas cap, and you’ll have access to
the gas tank, which is how you refuel your vehicle. The fuel door serves a few
purposes. First, it looks much better than just an open fuel tank; the fuel
door allows the car to continue its aesthetic. Second, and more importantly,
the fuel door offers protection for the gas cap. It also makes it that much
harder for someone to poach the fuel in your car.
Purpose Of Fuel Door & Components
The
fuel door is made of metal, and it is a protective cover which keeps the debris
and dust particles from entering the fuel or gas tank. The fuel door is found
on the left or right side of the vehicle near to the trunk. There are chances
for the fuel door hinge or spring to corrode. This, in turn, will keep the fuel
door open, where the filler cap may be exposed to debris and moisture, and it
will damage the filler cap. It might be difficult to refuel the tank where the
fuel door may get closed.
Frequent Problems Of Fuel Door & Components
You
will have to replace the damaged
fuel door and its components as it will prevent it from
opening. The appearance of the fuel door can get degraded if it is rusted,
corroded, or damaged by any means. You can get rid of these issues by replacing
them with new fuel door. A hinge that is present on the fuel door allows it to
open and close. Frequent usage of these hinges will make them brittle and they
will start snapping making the door to fail. The fuel door hinge that is worn
out may get stuck or become loose, making it hard to open or close the door.
Symptoms Of Bad Fuel Door & Components
There
are 2 main reasons as to why you should replace the fuel door if it has trouble
while opening and closing.
- If
the door is not closing, then there may be dirt and moisture around the filler

time goes by, the fuel door, hinge or spring can start corroding. Even if there
is a road accident, there are chances that the door might get bent out of
shape.
- The
door may not even open if it has faced any external damage. Even small damage
or dent on the door can prevent it from opening.
- The
actuator of the fuel door will get gummed, may stop working or the solenoid
that is present inside might wear out eventually.
- Before
you repair fully you will have to leave the fuel filler door open to gas up.
You should also be able to panel that is present inside the trunk on the fuel
door side and try opening the door from behind.

How To Change Fuel Door & Components?
Before you install a new
fuel door, it is best to make sure that the fuel door is correctly aligned in
both the opening and plunger sides in and out. If the fuel door is not properly
seated or if it does not bind inside the door, then it will be tough or
impossible to open the fuel door.
Remove The Factory Fuel
Door
- You will have to
completely replace and repair the factory fuel.
- You will notice 2 screws
or 2 rivets on the left side of the housing once you open the door. If there
are any screws, remove them.
- If there are rivets
remove them with the 17/64” drill bit. Be sure not to damage the paint while
you drill.
- Drill the rivet in
different directions so that it weakens the rivet material and comes out. Once
the rivet is out, the plastic shroud that holds the cap and hose have to be
removed.
- In some vehicles, the
fuel cap is fixed to the shroud whereas in other vehicles the cap is fixed to
the factory hinge.
- In this scenario, you
will have to unscrew the cap and allow it to hang from the hinge.
- Now that the two rivets
and two screws are removed push the shroud and fuel door and the hinge will
slide out.
- The two rubber stoppers
on the right side of the opening should not be removed.
Install The Fuel Door
- Install the fuel door
hinge in the same place as where the old fuel door hinge was fixed. With the help of a head screw, fix the hinge
to the vehicle.
- Now make sure that the
door plate is leveled and is positioned in the center. Make sure that the fuel
door faceplate is placed in the center and rotated.
- Once this is done, shut
the door and lock it many times to make sure that the door openly freely. You
will have to reposition the door if you find it difficult to turn the key.
- The plunger may bind if
the plate is not aligned properly and the door will not open. If the door is
shut, and if it does not open on turning the key, then it means that the
plunger is holding the door from being closed.
- If you want the plunger to
be released, then you will have to use a flashlight, go under the vehicle and
push it with your finger.
- The door will spring
open, once the plunger is released and you can align the door again so that the
plunger doesn’t bind.
- The door will open and
close easily if it is properly seated. Reinstall the screws which hold the
shroud by tightening the mounting screws.
- You will have to pull
the fuel cap if it is fixed to the hinge by squeezing the 2 pins which hold the
hinge.
- Now push the plastic
piece into the hole until it snaps inside. The fuel door is ready, once this is
done.
