Essential Things To Know About Your Car's Window Hardware
What Is Window Hardware?
With
the advent of technology, convenience has become one of the greater features
that an automobile offers in order to meet global demands, one of which is the
power windows. In the early days, the windows were cranked using a lever in the
door panel – to lower or raise the window. Now it can be done with the touch of
a button all thanks to Electric Power Windows.
Where Is The Window Hardware Located?
All
the vehicle's door
hardware and the window hardware lie together in the car door panel
of the car and also the entire window when it is fully retracted.
Types Of Window Hardware
There
are essentially two types of Window Hardware:
- Manual Crank: The window is actuated using an auto window crank operated by the user.
- Electronic Power Windows: This is the type of window hardware found in most modern cars. It employs an electric motor to operate the window. The electric motor is actuated using a switch on the door panel.
Important Features Of Window Hardware
Here
are the most important features of the Window Hardware:
- They
allow for lowering and raising the windows on every door.
- The power windows make it very easy to pull the windows down or up using the flick of a button.
- Power windows also offer interesting features such as automatic up, automatic down and courtesy power on.
How Does Window Hardware Works?
In
case of a manual cranked window, a lever is cranked which operates a window
mechanism that lifts and lowers the windows. Whereas, The power window lift on
most cars uses a unique but ingenious linkage to lift the window glass while
keeping it level. A small electric motor is attached to a worm gear and several
other spur gears to create a large gear reduction, giving it enough torque to
lift the window. The linkage has a long arm, which attaches to a bar that holds
the bottom of the window. The end of the arm can slide in a groove in the bar
as the window rises. On the other end of the bar is a large plate that has gear
teeth cut into it, and the motor turns a gear that engages this teeth. The same
linkage is often used on cars with manual windows, but instead of a motor
turning the gear, the crank handle turns it.
Frequent Problems With Window Hardware
Manually
cranked windows are less prone to failure as they do not contain any electrical
element which can fuse or malfunction over time. In case of a power window
system, the most prone elements are the window regulator,
electric motors, cable pulley and window switch. The
regulator is the mechanism that allows for the movement of the window,
consisting of gears and levers that actuate when the motor is supplied with
current via the window switch. The following are the most frequent problems
experienced in a power window system:
- The
regulator is faulty and hence allows no movement of the window in either
direction.
- The
electric motor can heat up and eventually burn out causing system failure as it
is the most critical part.
- The
window switch often breaks down and requires a replacement.
- The cable pulley can lose its spring tension and hence require either proper refitment or replacement
- The power window fuse can be faulty.
Symptoms Of Window Hardware
Here
are a few symptoms highlighted to better combat power window failure:
- The
windows cannot be lowered or raised.
- If
none of the power windows are functioning then there must be a broken fuse.
- The
window does not fully retract or raise.
- The switch functioning is glitchy.
- The window works intermittently.

door panel is firmly placed on and requires tools for safe removal so make sure
to use the proper tools for the best and neat job:

cost around 50-.350 dollars depending on the element to be replaced.
How To Change The Window Hardware?

behind the crank.

the armrest or armrest cover and few bolts will be visible, undo the bolts
using a screwdriver or ratchet according to the type of bolt.
- There
may also be a bolt near the door handle housing, undo that as well.
