Learn All About Car Door Hardware
What Is Door Hardware?
If you
have never looked inside the automotive door you will be surprised to find how
much hardware and different types of mechanisms go into keeping your car safe
and restricting others from entering the vehicle without the keys. This is done
in order to provide the best safety features while also reducing human effort
while unlocking the door and cracking down the window. All these components
have many different hardware that go along for smooth operation and hence is
essential. These parts may seem unimportant but are responsible for the safety
of the car. The Car Door hardware
is everything from a simple vehicle's door lock fuse
to car door lock actuators
to auto door lock cylinders
and automotive window regulators.
Where Is The Door Hardware Located?
All
the hardware of the door lies safely tucked behind the car door panel
and in between the panel and the exterior door body panel or door shell.
Types of Door Hardware
There
are many different elements in every car door that altogether comprise the door
hardware such as the car door handle,
latch, cylinder rod, actuators, regulators etc. All these are put together in
different fashions by every manufacturer but in theory, work in a similar way
and hence constitute a single type of mechanism.
Important Features Of Door Hardware
The
door hardware in every car is responsible for the many important functions:
- It
unlocks and locks the door using a key in older vehicles without power locks.
- Keyless entry in case of a power door locking system which greatly decreases human effort every time while opening or closing the door.
- Almost all cars today feature electronic power windows, which help lower or crank up the window with the hit of a button.
How Does Door Hardware Works?
The
two essential components in the door are the power windows and power locks. The
power locks consist of a rod, latch, a circuit chip and an actuator. The
power-door-lock actuator is usually positioned below the latch. A rod connects
the actuator to the latch, and another rod connects the latch to the knob that
sticks up out of the top of the door or in some cars, it is situated on the
armrest. When the actuator moves the latch up, it connects the outside door
handle to the opening mechanism. When the latch is down, the outside door
handle is disconnected from the mechanism so that it cannot be opened. To
unlock the door, the body controller supplies power to the door-lock actuator
for a timed interval.
Frequent Problems With Door Hardware
As
modern cars get more technologically advanced the various mechanical aspects of
the vehicle are converted to electrical elements to provide assistance to the
driver and passengers. This means that there are more electronic elements in
that car that are vulnerable to failure. Most power mechanisms such as power
doors and power windows are operated via electric motors
in the window which can fail over time and need replacement.
The actuators and the window regulator in a power window usually stop
functioning after a few years and may need replacing. In a side collision with
the door, the internals can get affected severely and hence will require a
replacement. In older cars, it is common to have manual car window
cranks for window operation and door handles to open and
close the door. These parts are frequently operated and break over time and a
replacement can be essential the next time you wish to open/close your door or
roll down/up the window.
Symptoms Of Door Hardware
When
the hardware in the door fails one can lookout for these signs as they appear:
- The
door doesn't latch properly.
- The
power windows don’t work or work partially to roll the window halfway.
- The door does not open easily or the locks are malfunctioning.
- Keyless entry does not work.
Tools Needed For Door Hardware
The
door panel is firmly placed on and requires tools for safe removal so make sure
to use the proper tools for the best and neat job:

The Door is a major body component of any car that
acts as a body panel and a gateway for entry. It has many different parts like:
Total Costs & Repair Times, Effort For Door Hardware
Since the door and window are operated on a daily
basis, they are prone to wear and tear especially the internal working
components and the electrical components like the actuators and motor. There
isn't much that can be done in terms or servicing but one can handle the
equipment with care in order to prolong its life. In case of power mechanisms,
make sure to avoid prolonged exposure to water as that can seep in and damage
the electricals, although necessary provisions are made in every car to combat
this. To replace the entire assembly as in the door shell and panel along with
all the internal hardware can set one back around 1500 dollars. But if you
attempt to fix only a specific broken part or a hardware component like the
window regulator, then it may cost 50-200 dollars.
How To Change The Door Hardware?
To access the door hardware it is necessary to
remove the door panel. To remove the door panel follow along these steps:
- Open the door and remove any plastic covers along
the window near the panel.
- In case of a manual crank window, use a clip tool to
remove a spring clip situated behind the crank.
- Remove the armrest or armrest cover and few bolts
will be visible, undo the bolts using a screwdriver or ratchet according to the
type of bolt.
- There may also be a bolt near the door handle
housing, undo that as well.
- Look for other visible bolts on the panel and undo
them.
- After removing bolts and screws, use a plastic
scraper to remove the panel from the door shell. It may require a wiggling to
remove but will come right off after a bit of persistence.
- Now all the internal hardware or the door is exposed and can be accessed easily.
