All About Car Door Handle

What Is Car Handle?

A door handle is used for opening and closing the car doors. You can find this on the exterior and interior sides of the doors but are used differently on each panel. The outer door handle is used for pulling the car door outside and the inner car handle helps to release the door latch when you pull the door to yourself.

Where Is Car Handle Located?

In some cars, the door handles is found as an extension on the outer side of the car whereas, in some cars, they are built into the fascia of the vehicles so it forms as a part of the body. Door handles are usually made of steel, whereas in very expensive cars, you can see the chrome door handles. In luxury vehicles like Lincoln Town Center, there is an electronic entry pad where you have to enter a numerical code or you must scan your thumb for the door to open.

Important Features Of Car Handle

  • Components like frames, levers, etc are made from durable plastic and metal.
  • Front and rear door handles have been strengthened in failure-prone areas.
  • When compared to the originals, these interior door handle parts are much better.
  • They come in a variety of colors, including chrome.

How Does Car Handles Works?

A door is controlled by the door handle by manipulation of a latch which is a mechanical fastener that helps to join two or more objects together. In a door, a latch connects it with its frame and tends to embody a sliding bolt that is fixed in the door and a receptacle is fixed in its frame.

The position of the latch is identified by the handle that can take many forms which includes the knob and lever. It is then fixed to the latch through a spindle and cylinder. As the handle is pulled or rotated, the action will be carried by the spindle into the cylinder, which will turn in the clockwise or anticlockwise direction based on its orientation.

The movement of the cylinder will cause the fixed bolt to be forced across the internal face of the door by sliding inside or outside of the frame’s latch receptacle. This will make the door to either close or open.

Symptoms Of Bad Car Handle

Here are a few symptoms of a bad door handle:

Loose door handle

  • A loose door handle is one of the first symptoms of a problem with an exterior door handle.
  • At times a damaged or worn out door handle can be loose and they may hang when you pull them.
  • Sometimes you will have to put more force to pull a worn out door handle.

The door will not open

  • The door will not open when you operate the door handle and this is another symptom.
  • There will be a problem while you open the door if the door handle breaks, either internally or externally. Even if the linkage rod or clip breaks, then it will also cause a problem.
  • You will have to put more pressure to open the door or there may not be resistance if you pull when it is broken.

The door does not shut or has trouble staying shut

  • The door will not shut or may have trouble to close. This is another symptom of a broken door handle.
  • There will be a problem with the door latch mechanism when closing the door if the door handle or the linkage components break.
  • If the latch is broken, then you will have to slam the door or try it multiple times to close.

A car door handle is a single component and the problem in it can usually be found. However, it might be difficult to service, due to their location in the door.

How To Change Car Handle?

Step 1

Find all the screws on your door panel and remove them. Some screws may be out whereas others have a small trim cover. A few may be hidden at the backside of the grab handle or around the outer edge of the door panel.

Step 2

Remove the door panel from the fasteners or clips with the help of a removal tool. You will find several clips that hold the panels in place. You will have to insert the trim panel removal tool between the door and interior panel and try to pry the door panel from the clips. The clips can break easily and so be gentle.

Step 3

Once you separate the door panel from the retaining clips, you will have to push it from the bottom. The door panel’s top edge will pop up along the window. Now reach behind the door panel to take off the electrical connectors for the power window, door lock, trunk, fuel door release buttons. You will have to angle the door panel to fully lift the door panel out of place or the door handle assembly to pull it back through the opening that is present in the door panel so that you can lift it off completely.

Step 4

Now take off the plastic vapor barrier if needed and make sure to keep it intact and do not cut it open. In a few vehicles, the side airbag sensors may rely on pressure changes within the door for side-impact airbags to deploy and so the inner door must remain sealed properly. Replace the vapor barrier as soon as possible if it has been already defective or damaged during replacement.

Step 5

The inner door handle mechanism has to be removed. If there are any nuts or bolts that hold the door handle in place, unscrew them. The inner door handle to the door latch mechanism has a rod that is held together by plastic clips. Remove them carefully and if the handle is broken, replace it.

Step 6

Now install the inner door panel loosely. Both the inner and outer door handle functions have to be tested before you secure anything in place. Once the operation is verified, reattach any electrical connectors that you have removed and snapped the door panel back into the retaining clips. If any of the parts were broken during disassembling, then go and check with the local auto parts store.

Step 7

Now fix all the screws and trim pieces. Once you secure the door panel onto the retaining clips, reinstall all screws and trim pieces. Do not over-tighten them. An operational door handle is much needed for comfort inside the vehicle and if it is broken then it will be inconvenient.
