Importance Of Car Doors

What Are Doors?

A car door, typically used for entering and exiting the vehicle is usually hinged or attached using tracks, in front of the opening. Thus, the vehicle door enables the driver to open and close the door, providing access to the interior of the car and helping to securely close it too. Car doors can be controlled manually or electronically. Electronically controlled doors are found in high-end, expensive cars or the ones that are modified after purchase.

Types Of Doors

Following are the different types of doors that can be installed in a vehicle:

  1. Conventional Doors - Conventional door is a regular door hinged at the front-facing edge of the door, which allows the door to open and swing outwards from the car body. These doors are relatively safer because if they are opened when the car is in forward motion, the wind resistance will itself force door closure. Opening, closing and standing beside opened door of a vehicle can be very dangerous, especially at night. This is because these doors don’t come with any indication for other drivers on the road as to when they are being opened. This situation can lead to accidents as the drivers sometimes don’t have enough time to react and perform evasive actions to avoid impact. For this, many doors today are installed with reflective tapes on the lower interior side of the door. This enables others to see the opened door easily, even in the dark.
  2. Suicide Doors - These doors are attached to the door via its trailing edge. The name is given because the doors can detach due to high wind pressure if the door is opened when the car is moving.
  3. Scissor Doors - These doors are famously found in high end cars and are hinged on the top end of the windshield, enabling the doors to open upwards vertically.
  4. Butterfly Doors - These doors are similar to scissor doors but move in outward direction. These were designed to safer entry/exit and also saves space on installation.
  5. Gull-Wing Doors - These doors are inspired by a seagull opening its wings. Thus, gull-wing doors are hinged to the car roof and when opened, imitate the look of a seagull opening its wings.
  6. Sliding Doors - Sliding doors are used in slightly bigger and commercial vehicles that allow large opening when the door is opened. This enables big and heavy equipment to get loaded and unloaded in and out of the vehicle easily. Sliding doors may open horizontally or vertically and can be suspended from a track or get mounted on.
  7. Canopy Doors - These doors usually sit on the car top and lifts up in some way or the other, similar to aircraft canopy. Canopy installation usually doesn’t have asset standard and can be hinged at the front, back or side also. These doors see rare light when comes to commercial production and are used in closed variant prototypes and concept cars.
  8. Disappearing Doors - These doors are attached in a way that they slide downwards, under the car. This leaves the entire passenger compartment open for entry and exit. This door is also known as Rotary Drop Door.

Purpose Of Doors

A car door may be attached to the car using hinges or sliding over a track. It enables the entry and exit into and from the passenger compartment. Apart from this main function, car doors have also been started to be treated as a cosmetic entity.

Frequent Problems With Doors

People don’t realize that the doors are the only way for them to get in and out of the car. If the car doors become non-operational, one can get stuck in or out of the car. Following are the reasons due to which this problem may occur:

  1. Door Lock Actuator Broken - A door actuator is an electric powered motor which sends signal to open and close the door locks. The actuator is the reason the door locks and unlocks when you use the keys and press the button, when sitting in the driver’s seat. If the door lock actuator is broken and the signal is not getting sent correctly, the door will malfunction. There can be many reasons for faulty actuator like broken wiring and connection, or failure of the entire component.
  2. Faulty Handles - The door handles need to function properly, if u want to open the doors. If you feel the door handles have become fragile, you might need to replace them immediately.
  3. Doors Not Staying Shut - If the car doors are not staying shut, it can pose a major setback and security risk. This happens usually due to malfunctioned striker plate. The striker plate holds the door intact when you slam the door shut. If you have to do it several times before the door gets shut, suspect the strike plate failure that might need replacement.
  4. Tight Doors - If the doors are tight and won’t open of shut properly, they might need some lubrication at the hinges. If you hear squeaking sounds and the door jams, it may use some oil at the hinge.
  5. Faulty Electric Track Doors - Track doors are usually installed in mid-size vans and commercial vehicles and this problem is relevant to those vehicles only. The vehicle sends the signal to the door to open and close them whenever asked for. If the track door signal component has malfunctioned, the door operation will malfunction and may also lead to clicking noise or metal screeches. Thus, the components might need immediate replacement.
