DIY-able Install with a Bit of Muscle
Z. TexiwalaÉvalué à PREVOST, QC le July 25, 2024

I did the install on my E450 RV's rear shocks by myself. After a recent trip of over 4800 kilometers, I'm not entirely sure if they're a huge improvement over the original ones, which had about 56,000 kilometers on them. If you're installing these shocks yourself with the RV on the ground, you'll need some serious strength and coordination to get the lower mount in, or you might have to find a way to raise the frame roughly 7.5 cm. I managed it by inflating the RV's rear airbags to the max, which gave me about 3.8 cm, and then used a budget-friendly hydraulic bottle jack to lift it further so I could slide the bolt in. The instructions mention some torque settings, but at the top of this shock, just tighten the lock nut until the bushing starts to expand?be careful not to over-tighten. The lower bolt did get torqued. If you're a visual learner, definitely check out a YouTube tutorial on this. Overall, it's doable if you're up for the challenge.

Rear Shocks Installation on an '01 29' RV
Francois D.Évalué à SAINTE-JULIENNE, QC le July 19, 2024
I'd already put Bilstein shocks on the front axle, and now it was time for the rear. The biggest challenge was removing the nut from the top of each OEM shock?easy on the left side, but the right was blocked by the RV body on the chassis. After some wrestling with the vehicle jacked up, I managed to swap the shocks. The whole process took about 5-6 hours, and I'd say if you can find a fair mechanic, it might be worth paying for the installation. The test drive revealed even better control, significantly reducing sway during sharp turns. Upgrading to Bilsteins has made the RV feel much safer on the road.

Good fit, but watch the heat

Fits a 2014 Ford E350 Super Duty Base (motorhome) just fine. But since they're gas-loaded shocks, you need to keep them away from heat sources, which is tricky in my motorhome since the exhaust pipe's right by the rear right shock. If one shock gets hotter than the other, it could throw off the vehicle's stability. I had to rig up a heat shield from some thin stainless steel sheets to protect it. Haven't gone for a test drive with the shield yet, will update when I do. P.S.: The original Motorcraft shocks aren't gas-loaded, so they don't have this issue.

Challenging installation without compression

It was a bit of a struggle to install since it required compressing the shock, which wasn't the easiest task.

Got these Bilstein shocks. To be honest, I couldn't feel a difference compared to the old blown out Ranchos, but oh well. What I can rave about is Parts Avatar's super speedy shipping!

Top-notch ride and handling for Ford E series

Picked these up for my 2018 Ford E350 box truck when it was around 145,000 kilometers. It's now at roughly 195,000 kilometers, and I drive a ton for work. These shocks really upped the game in both the smoothness of the ride and the handling. They appear to be made really well.
