OBD Code P2690 - Cylinder 5 Injector Data Incompatible

<<See All OBD Codes

If the Check Engine Light illuminating on the dashboard? Are you experiencing reduced engine performance along with affected fuel economy? Is there black smoke emitting from the exhaust pipe? All these are the indications of increased emissions and affected exhaust system which in this case can be due to bad fuel injector, thus causing OBD code P2690 to get stored in the Powertrain Control Module.

Learn More About OBD Error Code P2690

Every fuel injector has a unique calibration number whose information is stored in the powertrain control module (PCM). The PCM recognises every injector uniquely and responds to its functions accordingly. When the PCM is unable to recognise a particular injector, an OBD error code may get stored.

Thus, when the PCM is unable to recognise Cylinder 5 fuel injector, OBD code P2690 gets stored in the system.

What causes this problem with the Cylinder 5 Injector Data Incompatible?

  • Defective fuel injector
  • Damaged fuel injector wiring and harness
  • Open or short in the injector wiring
  • Problem in the injector circuit
  • PCM programming error

Replace/Repair These Parts To Fix OBD Code P2690

  1. Engine Control Module - It is not always the components, but the ECM that can also be faulty. It can cause misinterpretation of correct data thus leading to wrong operational decisions which will affect the transmission and overall engine performance. Thus, replace faulty module and reprogram it now!
  2. Powertrain Control Module - Powertrain Control Module can also be faulty in rare cases and thus needs through checks for system and software errors. Thus check and replace it, if required.
  3. Diagnostic Tool - It is always advisable to use the correct tools and equipment while resolving any OBD code issue as even small mistakes can lead to wrong diagnosis. Thus, always take help from a professional who has the knowledge and experience to such tools in an efficient manner. Buy new quality diagnostic tools from us today!
  4. Electronic Control Unit – ECU monitors the temperature differences in the boost converter with the help of the temperature sensors to prevent the converter from overheating and malfunctioning. Thus, replace faulty ECU immediately.
  5. Fuel Injector – The fuel injector is a small nozzle into which liquid fuel is injected at high pressure. It works like a spray nozzle of a pressure washer. The placement of the injector can be in a different part of the engine depending upon the type of fuel injection system is being used. High pressure from the fuel pump feeds the fuel to the fuel injector. Thus, replace damaged fuel injector now!
  6. Injector Connector – If the injector connector is damaged the fuel injector may not function properly, causing operational error. Thus, replace faulty components now!

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P2690

It is essential to diagnose this fault code. Here are some steps which a mechanic should follow for diagnosing the problem that triggered a P2690 code to be stored:

  • This type of error code usually occurs in the diesel engine powered vehicles. In many late diesel engine vehicles, the fuel injectors are embedded by unique alphanumeric identification numbers that differentiate every injector from each other.
  • This alphanumeric code has to be programmed in the PCM or CAN (Controller Area Network) for the system to identify and respond to each injector separately.
  • The CAN acts as the brain of the vehicle system which takes input from various sensors and thus takes appropriate actions and control function.
  • If the unique identification number in not recognised by the PCM, such OBD error code may occur. In such a scenario, the PCM might require reprogramming and the unique IDs must be restored in the system.
  • Make use of a diagnostic scanner, a digital volt/ohmmeter (DVOM), and a source of vehicle specific diagnostic information to diagnose OBD code P2690.
  • Obtain CAN bus system wiring and connector diagram and check for the CAN resistance to match with the manufacturer’s specification. If the CAN system output is faulty, it might be physically damaged and need replacement or simply might need reprogramming.
  • Begin the diagnosis by visually inspecting the wiring harnesses and connectors. Repair or replace burnt or damaged wiring and or connectors before doing any further diagnosis.
  • Plug the scanner into the vehicle diagnostic connector and retrieve all stored codes and pertinent freeze frame data. Note this information down before clearing the fault codes. Make the PCM to go into readiness mode or reset the code by test driving the vehicle.
  • If the PCM enters readiness mode, the code is intermittent and will be difficult to diagnose. If the code gets reset immediately, start searching for the correct location of the cylinder 5 fuel injector.
  • Test (voltage drop) the power supply to the control system using a DVOM. Check fuses with the circuit loaded to avoid misdiagnosis. With the help of the scanner, activate the fuel injector (solenoid) and test output control circuit voltage, if the power battery voltage and ground circuit are discovered appropriately.
  • There are chances that the controller is bad or has experienced a programming error, if the voltage is insufficient. If the voltage output circuit is within parameters, use the DVOM and test the fuel injector. If the injector does not meet manufacturer’s specifications, then it might have failed and shall be replaced.

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing The P2690 Code

  • Fuel injector programming error to the PCM and CAN
  • CAN system pin and connector damage
  • Fuel injector faulty
