P252E - OBD Trouble Code
OBD Code P252E - Engine Oil Quality Circuit Intermittent/Erratic
This is an OBD-II error code see by the Powertrain Control Module
(PCM) when it has picked up a malfunction of the engine oil quality sensor of
your vehicle. Hence, the P252E code is defined as an Engine Oil Quality Circuit
Intermittent/Erratic. The sensor has the responsibility of monitoring the
level, quality and temperature of the engine oil and reporting the information
to the PCM. After the code is set you will find a check oil or check engine
light turning on in your instrument cluster. This is basically to inform you
where the issue may be. Depending on the vehicle you drive, you may also get
additional information regarding the engine oil.
Learn More About OBD Error Code P252E
In order to be able to diagnose the code you will have to
understand what happened and what the P252E code truly means. The oil quality
sensor circuit is the one that sends the signals to the Engine Control Module
or ECM. Any issues with the circuit or connectors can cause random signals to
float through to the ECM causing the P252E code to be set. Being one of the
main components within the circuit, the engine oil quality sensor can be found
mounted to the engine oil pan in most vehicle makes and models. But to be sure
of its exact location you will have to refer your specific vehicles technical
service bulletins (TSB). Read more in this article about the causes to this
error and how to diagnose, and what to repair/replace to let go of the P252E
error code.
What causes
this problem with the Engine Oil Quality Circuit Intermittent/Erratic?
- Issue with the engine oil quality sensor
- The engine oil is below the normal/optimum level needed
- The quality of the engine oil is not acceptable
- Faulty or damaged electrical system including the connectors,
wiring and circuitry
- Malfunctioning of the ECM (rare but possible)
Replace/Repair These Parts To Fix OBD Code P252E
- Engine Oil Quality Sensor - Is the sensor
whose main job is to check the engine oil and how it is doing. Failure of the
sensor causes the P252E code to set by the PCM. Fix the issues via repairs or
replacement as needed.
- Engine Control Module - The ECM is the main system of your vehicle that monitors all the other
sensors and modules. The OBD-II codes are set when it notices an issue. In a
situation where the ECM itself isn’t functioning correctly, wrong error codes
can get set, such as the P252E code. It’s important to repair it immediately or
find replacement at PartsAvatar.
- Oil Pressure Gauge - This gauge is present on your vehicle's instrument cluster and is
responsible for showing the pressure of the oil to the driver. Wrong reading of
the gauge can cause issues with your vehicle, try to repair it and see how that
helps, otherwise replace it. Order online on PartsAvatar and have your order
reach you in less than a weeks’ time.
- Powertrain Control
Module - Is the central system of your vehicle. The
P252E code may have set because of a PCM malfunction, find the perfect
replacement PCM on PartsAvatar. Remember that replacements require
reprogramming by a professional. Browse from a wide range of PCM online at
PartsAvatar, we ship orders above $99 free!
- Engine Wiring Connector - All signals from the engine oil quality sensor are sent via electrical
system, the connector is part of the engine wiring harness. If the connector is
burned, chafed, has bent pins it can put across incorrect signals to be
processed to the ECM. Hence it is important to repair or replace it, you can
order vehicle compatible auto parts like connectors on PartsAvatar. We offer 24/7
online customer support for free.
- Diagnostic Tools - These are all the tools one may require in diagnosing automobile OBD
codes. Competent diagnostic tools can help resolve codes like P252E quickly.
Choose from a wide range of diagnostic tools on PartsAvatar, track your order
till it reached your doorstep!

cluster
How To Correct P252E Engine Oil Quality Circuit Intermittent/Erratic
Learn the ways with which you can correct this
trouble code P252E:
- Repair or replace the engine oil quality sensor
- Repair the connectors by cleaning any corrosion
on them. Replace them if that doesn't help
- All faulty wiring will have to be repaired, or
replaced
- Change the oil and the filter if repairs don’t
solve the filters problems
- All the malfunctioning ground straps will need
to be replaced
- Flash or replace the ECM

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P252E
It is essential to diagnose this
fault code. Here are some steps which a mechanic should follow for diagnosing
the problem that triggered a P252E code to be stored:
Step 1 - Get your vehicle specific Technical
Service Bulletins (TSB) and see if you can find the code and ways to resolve it
there. The TSB will be source of reference through the diagnostic procedure.
Make sure you match the TSB’s accurately with your vehicles, year, make, model
and engine details.
Step 2 - Check the condition of the engine oil
and see if it is at the appropriate level or not. You will have to refill it if
it’s running low.
Step 3 - You can easily find the components
related to the engine oil quality sensor circuit and inspect if there’s any
damages visible. To locate these components, take help from the TSB. Visually
inspect the wiring for any damages lie bare wires, burned or chafed surfaces,
rubbing, scraping etc. Repair as needed or opt for replacement.
Step 4 - It’s time to check the connectors and
see if they’re securely set, or if there’s any corrosion or damage to the pins.
Sometimes pins get bent as well. Perform this step with the connectors and
wires of the ECM as well. In order to verify that everything is configured
correctly, refer the TSB. Verify the configurations of the fuse and fusible
links as well.
Step 5 - Using correct instruments you can do a
voltage check. You will need a DVOM and your TSB again. Ensure the reference
voltage is well within the range specified by your vehicle's manufacturer. If
you find that there is an absence of power source or ground, then you will need
to perform continuity tests to verify the strength of the wiring, connectors
and other components. These continuity tests have to be performed after
removing power from the circuit and the readings for wiring and connections
should show 0 ohms of resistance. Resistance of no continuity is indicative of
improper wiring, or shorted or corroded wires. These must be repaired and
replaced as needed.
Common Mistakes When Diagnosing the P252E Code
- Failure of the whole Oil
quality sensor
- Failure of the Powertrain
Control Module (PCM)
- Several issues present with the wiring,
connectors or circuitry
