P2135 - OBD Trouble Code
OBD Code P2135 - TPS Sensor Voltage Correlation DTC
You have the P2135 error code set in your
vehicle, and you don’t know what that means? Well, we’re here to take your
worries away. This code indicates that an erroneous reading was detected by the
Powertrain Control Module from the throttle position sensor A/B, the
accelerator pedal position sensor and/ the throttle plate. You can find out
more about this code and how to resolve it here, so read on.
Learn More About OBD Error Code P2135
You vehicles throttle position sensors are located in the throttle body inlet. The job of the PCM is to conduct comparisons between the sensor readings in order to test their efficiency and punctuality. The sensors send voltage signals to the PCM in relation to the position of the throttle plate. If there’s an incongruence with the readings the PCM will set the P2135 OBD code. The variation in the signal depends on how push the gas pedal is pushed. The PCM module uses the data it gets and compares it to the pre-programmed information, and if it notices that one throttle position sensor is reading half throttle and the other is reading full throttle it will conclude it as an error.
What causes this problem with the TPS Sensor Voltage Correlation DTC?
- Fault with the Powertrain Control Module
- Malfunctioning throttle position sensor(s)
- Problem with the accelerator position sensor
- Open, Shorted, damaged or broken electrical connections in the throttle position sensor
- Faulty electrical connections in the accelerator pedal position sensor
- Distorted top cover of the throttle body not allowing gears to turn as usual
- Fault with the electronic throttle body
- Failed wiring of the accelerator pedal sensor
- Failed engine management computer

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P2135
Before starting the diagnosis, know that the electronically controlled throttle system is extremely sensitive and hence easily damaged. You can to be extremely careful and patient while handling the components. If you think you need help from a professional, then don’t hesitate to approach a trained mechanic. Following are the steps needed to resolve the P2135 fault code:
Start your inspection, and you will find a flat plastic cover on the throttle body, the gears that actuate the throttle plate are located there. There's A small metal gear that protrudes through the housing under the cover, this drives a large “plastic” gear which is attached to the throttle plate. A pin is present in the throttle body housing which helps in centering and supporting the gear. There’s also a pin on top that fits into the “thin” plastic cover, so it’s important that this cover isn’t damaged in anyway. If it is distorted then the gear will be affected negatively and require a full replacement of the throttle body. Now it’s time to get hold of your vehicle Technical Service Bulletins or TSB. This will help you the steps for diagnosis. Connect your OBD scanner to the vehicles diagnostic port and retrieve all the data and freeze frame it. You will have to resolve the codes that were set prior to P2135 if there are any, chances are this code was set due to an issue present with the other codes.
Now you can safely pull the electrical connector out of the throttle body and inspect it for any missing or bent female terminals, be careful while performing this inspection. Any corrosion found will have to be repaired or cleaned via small screwdriver, apply some electrical grease on the terminals and reconnect it. If any parts are missing or not in good condition you can find replacements for them and sort the issue.
Probe the accelerator pedal sensor with a voltmeter and you will find a 5 volts for reference and varying signal next to it. Depress the pedal slowly after turning the key on, the voltage should increase from .5 to 5.0 in a smooth manner. If you find that the voltage spikes, or there no voltage at the signal wire, you will have to replace it.
Locate the wire terminal on the throttle body of you specific vehicle, for this you can refer the TSB, once you have found it, probe the throttle body connector for power to the throttle motor. Have someone help you by turning on the key and slightly depressing the pedal, if you find that there's no power present, then it’s an issue with the computer. If there’s power, then it's clear that there’s a malfunction of the throttle body.
View the voltage output of each sensor, they should be within the specifications of the manufacturer. To be able to note these, use a multimeter or scan tool and brack prove the accelerator pedal position sensor and throttle position sensor. Using the multimeter test the ohm levels of the accelerator pedal position sensor as well as the throttle position sensor. Make note if they’re within the range specified by the manufacturer, to know these ranges you can refer the TSB.
It’s very important that the TSB should be for the exact make model of your vehicle. Ensure you are able to follow them correctly and all the ranges are within the manufactured specifications.
Common mistakes when diagnosing the P2135 code
- Mixing up sensor 1 and 2 of the throttle position due to lack of knowledge and replacing the wrong sensor.
- Not following diagnostic steps in order
