The trouble code P0AFA can be defined as Hybrid Battery System Voltage Low. There are a lot of individual battery cells (sometimes over 300 cells) in the hybrid battery pack. The total voltage output of the hybrid battery pack is monitored by the hybrid powertrain control module. Now if the total output from the battery pack would be lower than what it should actually be, then the P0AFA fault code would be set. The high voltage system might not operate at all.

It is the engine control module which would monitor the correlation of the generator battery disconnect control module battery voltage and the starter generator control module (SGCM) output voltage to detect a 36-volt cable open or fuse/relay failure. The ECM also monitors to detect an over voltage situation and prevent the MOSFET (load dump). If either one of these conditions would be detected, then P0AFA error code would be set.

What causes this problem with the Hybrid Battery System Voltage Low?

• Some flaws in the 36-volt battery cable

• The mechanic will insert a scanner to diagnostic port of the vehicle and recover the codes and freeze frame data.
