OBD Code P0A45 - Drive Motor "B" Position Sensor Circuit

<<See All OBD Codes

What does drive motor ‘B’ position sensor circuit mean? Why does P0A45 error occur? Drive motor ‘B’ position sensor circuit refers to the high voltage system that malfunctions. By using the sensors, the hybrid control module finds the location of the hybrid motor’s internal components. If there is any fault in the position sensor which is found by the hybrid control module, then the P0A45 error code will be set by the ECM module.

Learn More About OBD Error Code P0A45

The motor control module monitors the drive motor generator position sensor. Depending on the signals of the resolver-type position sensor, the angular position, speed and direction of the drive motor generator rotor is carefully monitored by the motor. There is a drive coil, 2 driven coils and a metallic rotor of irregular shape which the position sensor has. The metallic rotor is fixed to the drive motor generator’s shaft. An output of 7 volt ac, 10 kHz excitation signal comes out of the drive coil from the motor control module when the vehicle is ON. A magnetic field is created by the drive coil which surrounds the 2 driven coil and irregular shaped rotor. The 2 driven coil circuit is then monitored by the motor control module for a return signal. The return signals of the driven coil that is magnetically induced will differ in size and shape due to the position of the irregular metallic rotor. The correct location, speed and direction of the drive motor generator rotor is found when the 2 driven coils are compared by the motor control module. It is not possible to service the position sensor of drive motor generator.

What causes this problem with the Drive Motor "B" Position Sensor Circuit?

  • Problematic inverter along with converter assembly.
  • Hybrid vehicle generator assembly might have issues.
  • The hybrid vehicle motor assembly might be faulty.
  • Faulty connectors or engine wiring harness.

  • With the help of a scanner, the mechanic will recover every of the stored codes and freeze frame data by connecting it to the diagnostic port of the vehicle.
  • Initially the mechanic will begin by checking the drive coils and positions sensor as it can cause performance issues. Also, they can be one of the reason if the error code is stored in the vehicle.
  • After this, the mechanic will look after the components like motor generator, generator assembly, converter assembly, motor assembly, for any damages and defects. Necessary repairs will be carried out if they are defective.
  • Finally the connectors will be inspected for any damages. Once every diagnosis and repairs are properly done, it is very important to retest the code and test drive the vehicle to see if the error codes, still appear and if the engine light keeps blinking.
