OBD Code P0A40 - Drive Motor "A" Position Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

<<See All OBD Codes

What does P0A40 error code refer to? What are its symptoms and diagnostic procedures? This is a general type of error code where the high voltage system will not function properly is known as drive motor ‘A’ position sensor circuit range/ performance. The location of the hybrid motor’s internal component is identified by the hybrid control module with the help of sensors. If there is any fault in position sensor, then the engine control module will set the error code P0A40 in the system.

Learn More About OBD Error Code P0A40

The motor control module monitors the drive motor position sensor, angular position, speed and direction depending on the resolver-type position sensors signal. A drive coil, 2 driven coils and a metallic rotor of irregular shape is present in the position sensor. The metallic rotor is fixed to the shaft of the drive motor generator. The motor control module will give a 7-volt ac when the vehicle is on which excites 10 MHz signal to drive coil. A magnetic field is formed around the 2 driven coils and the irregular shaped rotor by the drive coil excitation signal. The 2 driven coil circuit is checked by the motor control module for return signal. The metallic rotors position will make the magnetically induced return signals of the driven coils to change in shape as well as in size. The correct position, speed and direction of the motor control module can be found by comparing the 2 driven coils. Position sensor cannot be serviced and it belongs to drive motor.

What causes this problem with the Drive Motor "A" Position Sensor Circuit Range/Performance?

  • The inverter which has the converter assembly might be defective.
  • The hybrid vehicle generator assembly might be damaged.
  • The hybrid vehicle motor assembly might malfunction.
  • Connectors or the engine harness might be damaged.

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0A40

If you want to easily diagnose this fault code, then all you have to do is to follow the steps which are mentioned below:

  • One of the main reasons of the P0A40 error code is because of the engine light which has failed.
  • Firstly, the mechanic will check the gas cap for the faulty engine light.
  • He will visually inspect the gas cap for any possible damages or cracks. If there are no damages, he will pull over and retighten the gas cap.
  • After making sure that there are no damages in the gas cap, the mechanic will test drive the vehicle and see if the engine light still appears.
  • Another reason, as to why this error code appears is because faulty position sensor and drive coils.
  • The mechanic will look after these components very carefully and replace them if they are damaged.
  • After this, the mechanic will check the motor assembly, generator assembly, and converter assembly for any possible damages and fix if any issue arises.
  • As a very rare case, the mechanic will carefully check for any faults in the connector and replace them if they are found to be damaged.
  • After carrying out this diagnosis, the mechanic will reset the vehicle for any error codes and test drive the vehicle again to see if the error code still appears and the engine light turns on.
