OBD Code P0797 - Pressure Control Solenoid C Stuck On

<<See All OBD Codes

This OBD error code P0797 is set by the PCM when it notices an incongruence between the pressure applied and the pressure desired. These calculations are based on the load on the engine, or engine speed, vehicle speed, and throttle position

Learn More About OBD Error Code P0797

The hydraulic pressure in the transmission is controlled by the transmission by using the pressure control solenoid. This pressure is needed to apply various clutch packs in the transmission. These in turn provide the different gear ratios required to propel the vehicle efficiently on the road. When the Transmission Control Module is able to detect that the pressure control solenoid isn’t performing as it should, it will proceed to setting P0797 error code in the vehicle.

Here’s a simple list of some common causes of a P0797 trouble code:

  • Poor electronic pressure control solenoid
  • Low level of automatic transmission fluid or dirty transmission fluid
  • Failure of the transmission
  • Malfunctioning PCM or Auto transmission control module

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0797

It is essential to diagnose this fault code. Here are some steps which a mechanic should follow for diagnosing the problem that triggered a P0797 code to be stored:

  • Start off by Procuring all the tools; a code reader, manual pressure gauge, hydraulic pressure diagram and a DVOM.
  • Pull the transmission dipstick and check the level of the fluid and also the condition of it. Look for any abnormal looking or burnt smell coming from the fluid. If the it smells strange and or looks contaminated, drop the pan and look for evidence of debris that may be present. If the fluid level has been low, then that’s a sign the transmission has suffered, there may be a need to rebuild it.
  • Follow the transmission level to detect any leaks. When they are found they should repaired and the transmission should be rebuilt too if it’s damaged.
  • After fixing all those issues, start fill the transmission fluid to the right level and start it, wait till the engine reaches the normal operating temperature.
  • Clear the trouble code P0797 and test drive the vehicle and note if it resets.
  • It’s not time to examine the wiring, connectors and components for any malfunctions or damages. This may require a replacement of the entire internal transmission harness also.
  • If the trouble code returns, connect the scanner to your vehicle's diagnostic port and download all the trouble codes and freeze frame the data.
  • Now refer the hydraulic pressure diagram for your specific vehicle and hook a manual pressure pump to the transmission. Check the pressure produced by the pump in relation to that specified for your vehicle.
  • If the OBD code was restored, use the DVOM (digital volt/ohmmeter) to check reference voltage and ground signal of the electronic pressure control solenoid which is the reason for the trouble code. If you find that the voltage or ground signal is open, you will have to check the continuity and the resistance of all the related circuits. Ensure that you disconnect any control modules on the circuit in-order to avoid the damage and memory loss.
  • If you still find the code returning after sorting out all the issues, then you will have to check the PCM.
  • Clear the P0797 trouble code again and see if the code returns
