Guide To P0747 OBD Error Code Solutions
OBD Code P0747 - Pressure Control Solenoid A Stuck On
Your
vehicle’s Transmission Control Module (TCM) is the one that sets code P0747.
Let’s try and understand why it does so, the TCM uses the pressure control
solenoids in order to control the hydraulic pressure in the transmission. This
pressure has to be controlled so that various clutch packs within the
transmission can work. These clutch packs hold significance as they are the
ones that provide different gear ratios so that the vehicle can efficiently be
propelled on the road. When the TCM is able to detect that the pressure control
solenoid isn’t performing as required by the vehicle, it will set the error
code.
Learn More About OBD Error Code P0747
To
understand more about the code, we need to understand how the important and
related parts function. The very important pressure control solenoid valve is
basically an electronic pressure regulator, its prime function is to control
the transmission line pressure. It does so on the basis of current flow through
coil windings. The magnetic field produced by the coil moved towards the solenoid’s
plunger further away from the exhaust port when the flow of current is
increased. When the exhaust port is
opening there’s a decrease in the output fluid pressure, which is regulated by
the PC solenoid valve. This in turn decreases the line pressure all together.
Now, the line pressure solenoid valve regulates the oil pump discharge pressure
so that it can suit the driving condition as per the signal sent from the TCM.

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0747
If
you want to easily diagnose this fault code, then all you have to do is to
follow the steps which are mentioned below:
- Since
this error is pertaining to transmission, always start by inspecting the
transmission fluid dipstick. Be thorough in checking and ensure that the fluid
level is as per manufacturer's specification for your vehicle make and model.
Also inspect the fluid for its quality. It should be in good working condition,
if it has any burned smell or looks abnormal in any way, you will have to
replace it.
- The
burned fluid is an indication that your vehicle's transmission was operating on
low fluid levels, this could also mean that the transmission may have suffered
internal mechanical failure due to this condition. When there’s the burned
smell present, you will need to remove the transmission pan and check for any
clutch material present, there may also be debris found. All these contaminate
the fluid; hence you will have to replace the fluid with new.
- Now
you can move on to checking for any shorted or burned wiring, and accordingly
replace circuitry and connectors. However, if the wiring, connectors and components
are alright, you can proceed to collecting all the codes set and freezeframe
the data. For this you will have to connect the scanner to your vehicles
diagnostic port. Also make note of these codes, for referential reasons in case
there’s an intermittent error.
- Clear
all codes and go for a test drive, see if the PCM enters readiness mode and
this error code isn’t reset immediately. In such a situation you have an
intermittent condition. These are typically difficult to diagnose and will
require the condition to worsen before accurate diagnosis can be drawn.
- Compare
your findings with the manufacturers provided specifications and proceed with
repairs accordingly. Usually low pump pressure is caused due to clogged
hydraulic passages, defect in the pump, problems in the shift solenoids or even
a faulty electronic pressure regulator. If you have to go for pump replacement,
note that it will require removal of transmission as well as partial
disassembly.
- If
the code returns immediately, and the transmission also seems to be working
fine, then you will have to check for reference voltage and ground signals at
the electronic pressure control solenoid.
- Try
to repair or opt for replacement of system circuits and connectors as per need.
Make sure you retest the system to know if the repairs/replacements were
successful. Now test all the circuits related to the electronic pressure
control solenoid as well as the solenoid for resistance and continuity. To find
out its exact location refer diagrams and charts provided by your vehicle’s
manufacturer. Now compare the readings to see if they are all within the range
prescribed by your manufacturer.
- Make
sure you retest the system every step of the way, so that you are confident
that the repairs and replacements have been successful. If you have found all
the system circuits are intact then connect the scanner to the diagnostic
connector and manually activate the electronic pressure control solenoid.
- If everything is fine then you can confidently suspect a defective high-pressure pump, torque converter, or PCM. PCM failure however is rare so make sure you aren’t being hasty.
Common Mistakes When
Diagnosing the P0747 Code
- Replacing
the high-pressure pump instead of checking the solenoid or electrical wiring for
issues.
