Error Code P0745: What It Means & What To Do?

OBD Code P0745 - Pressure Control Solenoid A Malfunction

<<See All OBD Codes

If you have the OBD error P0745 stored, don’t worry, we are here to facilitate understanding the issue as well as the components related to the error. The automatic transmission in your vehicle is present to match the engine's optimum power and torque characteristic, as per your desires when you are driving. It will match up to the rate of acceleration and speed that you want by auto-selecting different gear ratios or in simple terms speeds to power the wheels. In order to efficiently propel the vehicle down the roads, the hydraulic pressure in the transmission is controlled by the Pressure Control Solenoid. This control of pressure is needed to apply various clutch packs in the transmission which in turn provide the different gear ratios.

Learn More About OBD Error Code P0745

When the Powertrain Control Module of your vehicle notices that specific electrical voltage has dropped from the Pressure Control Solenoid when it is performing its tasks it will set the P0745 code. The Powertrain Computer or PCM module will also set the code if it notices correct electrical readings, however the performance of the Pressure Control Solenoid isn’t correct.

How To Correct P0745 Pressure Control Solenoid A Malfunction

Here are some ways with the help of which you will be able to correct the OBD Code P0745

  • If you notice that the transmission fluid is smelling off, or appears to burned or even scorched, you will have to take out the transmission pan and look for any clutch material being present. There may also be dirt or debris. If you do find such contaminants in this transmission pan, you will have to resolve this. For this, a complete rebuild along with fluid flush and fluid replacement will be needed.
  • In some cases, if the issue lies with the torque converter, you may need to install it before transmission can start to function again. If however, you weren’t able to notice any dirt or debris in the transmission pan, then proceeded to visually inspect all internal wirings and connectors. Repair or replace all shorted, corroded, or damaged wires as well as connectors.

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0745

Here are some steps which you should follow in order to diagnose this fault code:

  • The first thing to do when dealing with a transmission diagnosis is to inspect the transmission fluid dipstick (if equipped). Ensure the fluid level is well within the specifications of the manufacturer for your particular vehicle make model. Also, check the condition of the fluid, it shouldn’t be having an odd smell, like it is burned. If at all you do find such burned smell, consider the fluid inadequate and replace it with fresh transmission fluid. For this you will have to remove the transmission pan and look for any clutch material that may be present or any other debris.
  • Burned fluid is indicative of the transmission functioning during low fluid level. This will also mean that the transmission may have suffered internal mechanical failure due to the low fluid level.
  • The next step is to look for any shorted or burned wiring. If you find them, replace circuitry and connectors as per need. Repairing may also do the job depending on the extent of damage they are in. Most applications will require a full replacement of the internal transmission harness in case discrepancies are noted.
  • If you have found no issues with the wiring, connectors and components, then you can proceed to connecting your scanner to the diagnostic port of your vehicle and retrieve all the stored codes and freeze frame the data. Ensure you also note them down in their order of occurrence for future reference in case the error is intermittent. Clear all codes and take your vehicle for test ride and see if the code resets. If it doesn’t reset and the PCM enter readiness mode then you may be having an intermittent condition. These conditions can be challenging to diagnose and in unfortunate and extreme cases will require the issue to worsen much more before correct diagnosis can be made.
  • You will now have to compare your findings with the specifications of the manufacturers and repair accordingly. Low pump pressure happens due to clogged hydraulic passages, or a defect in the pump, fault in shift solenoids or even a faulty electronic pressure regulator. In order to perform a pump replacement, you will have to remove the transmission and do partial disassembly.
  • When taking on the test drive if the code returned immediately, and the transmission seems to be operating as normal, then you will have to check reference voltage and ground signals at the electronic pressure control solenoid.
  • Repair or replace all the system circuits and/or connectors as per requirement and test the system. This will help you ensure that the repairs and/or replacements were successful. Use the wiring diagrams from your manufacturer to locate the electronic pressure control solenoid. Test all the related circuits present and also the solenoid for resistance as well as continuity. Now compare your findings and see if they match the specifications of your manufacturer.
  • Remember to retest the system to confirm successful repairs. If you have found that all the system circuits are intact, then connect the scanner to the diagnostic connector and attempt to activate the electronic pressure control solenoid manually.
  • If you have found that the control solenoid is functioning correctly and all the circuits are matching the manufacturers specs, then you can confidently suspect a defect in the high-pressure pump, torque converter or the PCM. However, PCM failure is rather rare and replacement of it will not only prove to me expensive, it will also require reprogramming. If even upon manual activation of the electronic pressure control solenoid, it fails to activate, you will have to replace it and retest the transmission control system.

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing the P0745 Code

Technicians may mistake the P0745 code as a misfiring engine issue or a problem with the vehicle’s performance. This type of confusion is rather common. Some may even assume that your vehicle is suffering from problems related to driveline, when in reality the issue is due to a defective valve body or solenoid. Hence it is important to ensure you go to a professional technician to resolve this OBD error.
