P06A9 OBD Error Code: Problem & Solutions

OBD Code P06A9 - Sensor Reference Voltage "D" Circuit Range/Performance

<<See All OBD Codes

The Powertrain control module or the PCM module has noticed an error in the reference voltage signal. Or a performance issue with a specific sensor which is given designation ‘D’. Upon detecting this error, the PCM will set P06A9 code. The sensor that’s responsible for this issue is linked to the automatic transmission, transfer case, or one of the differentials.

Learn More About OBD Error Code P06A9

Engine control module or the ECM of your vehicle sends out a 5 Volt reference signal, this goes to all the engine sensors applicable. If an issue is detected by the PCM with this signal, then it will go ahead and set error code P06A9

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P06A9

Here are some steps which you should follow in order to diagnose this fault code:

Start off by determining the location and function of the sensor in question. You can do this simply, by referring your specific vehicles information source. Once found, visually inspect the sensor system and corresponding wires, connectors and harnesses for damages. Repair or replace all those who are faulty, and then proceed with retrieving all the error codes stored in your vehicle. For this, connect the scanner to the vehicle diagnostic port. Freeze frame the data and also make note of it. This will enable you to determine if the code is intermittent, so be careful while recording and ensure the order of codes isn’t changed. Now, clear the codes and go on a test-drive. Observe if the code resets.

If the code immediately resets, then use your DVOM and test the sensor for reference voltage and the ground signals. Normally you can expect 5 volts and a ground. Continue to test the resistance and continuity levels of the sensor if the voltage and ground signals are still present at the connector. Compare these specs with that of your manufacturers, if they’re not in sync simply replace the sensors.

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing the P06A9 Code

  • Failed engine sensor
  • Malfunction of the Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
  • Issue in the wiring
