Error Code P0674: What It Means & What To Do?
OBD Code P0674 - Cylinder 4 Glow Plug Circuit
Are you experiencing hard engine starts and or
no start condition? Is there a lack of engine power and hesitation during
acceleration? Is the Check Engine Light illuminating on dashboard? All these
may be due to heat up problems with the engine cylinder flashing and storing
OBD code P0674 in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
Learn More About OBD Error Code P0674
When a diesel engine is cold, the extremely high
air temperature produced as the piston rises and compresses the air is quickly
lost through heat transfer to the cold cylinder head. The solution comes in the
form of a pencil shaped preheater known as a "glow plug." The glow
plug is installed in the cylinder head very close to the point that initializes
combustion, or the "hot spot." This could be in the main chamber or
pre-chamber. When the engine management computer senses the engine is cold
through the use of its oil and transmission sensors, it makes the decision to
assist the engine in starting with the use of the glow plugs.
It grounds the glow plug timer module which in
turn grounds the glow plug relay that sends power to the glow plugs. The module
applies power to the glow plugs. The module is generally incorporated in the
engine management computer, although so vehicles will have it separately. Too
long an activation will melt the glow plugs as they produce heat through heavy
resistance and glow red hot while activated. This intense heat is quickly
transferred to the cylinder head which allows the heat of combustion to
maintain its heat for the fraction of a second it takes to ignite the incoming
fuel for starting.
OBD code P0674 tells you that the glow plug
circuit is faulty causing the glow plug on cylinder 4 to fail to heat up. The
entire circuit must be checked to locate the fault.

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0674
Here
are some steps which you should follow in order to diagnose this fault code:
- Visually
inspect all wiring, connectors, and components associated with the glow plug
system. They should look for any loose, damaged, or corroded wiring,
components, or connectors, replacing them if needed.
- Save
the freeze frame data and any stored trouble codes on the PCM using the
scanner. Clear any codes and test drive the vehicle to see if the codes return.
If the code returns, check the individual glow plug connector to see if a
reference voltage or ground signal are present.
- Test
the resistance using the volt/ohmmeter, if the code returns after replacing a
faulty glow plug, comparing the readings gathered to the manufacturer's
specifications.
- If
no voltage is detected at the glow plug connector, they should test the fuses
of the glow plug system. This step requires that the mechanic test any fuses
with the glow plug heater activated. This helps ensure that the fuses are not
breaking down while under load.
- Next,
test the glow plug module, relay, and timer, making sure to compare their
findings to the manufacturer's specifications.
- If
the glow plug system seems to be in proper working order, the mechanic should
only disconnect and test the PCM as a last resort.
- Once
all the repairs have been made, the mechanic should clear the trouble code and
retest the system to see if the code returns.
