Diagnostic Trouble Code P0376 is technically defined as Timing Reference High Resolution Signal B Too Many Pulses wherein "B" is a reference to an area of the system's cycle. This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is a generic powertrain code, which means it applies to OBD-II equipped vehicles which have an engine position sensor. Error code P0376 indicates that the car's PCM has detected an irregularity with the high-resolution reference signal. If the PCM detects variations in the high-resolution engine timing signal that exceed a predetermined number of degrees, a code will be stored.

OBD-II Code Decreased engine performance is defined as a Timing Reference High Resolution Signal "B" Too Many Pulses. P0376 is set when the PCM detects the engine position sensor "B" is producing a signal with too many pulses. The optical sensor provides a high-resolution signal to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) by counting pulses on the sensor disk located in the injection pump. This signal is extremely important because it aids the PCM with fuel timing and overall control. When PCM has detects an abnormality in the high-resolution timing reference signal and variations in the high-resolution engine timing signal that exceed a predetermined number of degrees, a code will be stored and a service engine soon lamp may be illuminated. There are approximately 64 high resolution pulses for every cam pulse.

What causes this problem with the Timing Reference High Resolution Signal B Too Many Pulses?
