P0375 OBD Error Code: Problem & Solutions

P0375 is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) for "Timing Reference High Resolution Signal B Malfunction". It means Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has detected a problem with the high-resolution timing reference signal. “Signal B” is a reference to the location of the system circuitry and not a particular component. Due to this trouble code you may start facing problems like decreased engine performance or even your engine may not start. The severity of this code is moderate to severe.

OBD-II Code Decreased engine performance is defined as a Timing Reference High Resolution Signal "B". The Code P0375 is set when the PCM detects a malfunction with the "B" engine position sensor signal. Optical sensor is responsible for providing high resolution signals to the PCM. it does this by counting pulses on the vehicle’s sensor disk, installed in the injection pump. These high-resolution inputs are one of the most important inputs by the PCM for fuel control and timing as it directly affects the module’s ability to fuel timing and control. For every pump cam pulse, the number of pulses detected is counted and compared to how many should have occurred. If the number counted is abnormal, then the PCM will store the P0375 trouble code.

What causes this problem with the Timing Reference High Resolution Signal B Malfunction?

1. Powertrain Control Module - The powertrain or engine control module is a powerful computer that manages the engine's ignition, fuel injection, and emission systems. If you want your vehicle to run smoothly then make sure your PCM is not malfunctioned.
2. Camshaft Position Sensor - The camshaft position sensor gathers information about the vehicle’s camshaft speed and sends it to the vehicle’s engine control module (ECM). The ECM uses this data to determine the timing of the ignition, as well as the timing of the fuel injection that the engine requires. Without this information, the engine would not be able to function properly. Replace camshaft position sensor if you find it faulty.
3. Crankshaft Position Sensor - The crankshaft position sensor is an engine management component found on virtually all modern vehicles with internal combustion engines. It monitors the position and rotational speed of the crankshaft and sends the information to the engine control unit so it can make appropriate adjustments based on operating conditions. Make sure it works properly to avoid all the related trouble codes.

To correct or fix this code one should seek assistance from a trained automotive diagnostician but if you want to do it by yourself, make sure you do the following repairs and replacements:

• Faulty connectors should be taken care
• Replace shorted or open wiring
• Repair/replace the crankshaft position sensor, sensor connector, or crankshaft gear

Note: There is a test drive recommended after you've completed any repairs to see if the condition is fixed. Before you take a test drive after a repair, always erase the P Code(s) first. This will turn the check engine light off and then you will know if the check engine light returns, you've got further diagnostics to complete.

Troubleshooting steps may differ depending upon manufacturer. A good starting point is always a technical service. Several tools may be required to successfully diagnose this code.

• Scan the code from your vehicle’s PCM with the help of scanner.
• Use a tachometer to check when your vehicle is cranked
• Examine wires and other electrical components.
• Inspect the vehicle’s crankshaft position sensor, crankshaft gear, and sensor connector for any indication of damage
• Test the CPS signal wire of your vehicle for adequate waveforms during every engine resolution.

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing the P0375 Code

• Unnecessary replacement of camshaft, crankshaft, and distributor sensors.
• Crank and cam reluctor rings also need to be checked any time you are replacing sensors.
