Guide To P0325 OBD Error Code Solutions
OBD Code P0325 - Knock Sensor 1 Circuit Malfunction
OBD-II
Code P0325 is defined as a Knock Sensor #1 - Circuit Malfunction (Single Sensor
or Bank 1). The P0325 code means that the Knock Sensor is not working properly.
This code is detected when an excessively low or high voltage from the sensor
is sent to Engine Control Module (ECM). A knock sensor tells the engine
computer when one or more of your engine's cylinders are "knocking"
means exploding the air/fuel mixture in a way that delivers less power and can
be damaging to the engine if delayed.
Learn More About OBD Error Code P0325
P0325
stands for knock sensor circuit malfunction. This means the PCM has detected a
problem with the knock sensor or its circuit. Some vehicles may be equipped
with two knock sensors. Code P0325 pertains to the sensor on bank 1 (the side
of the engine where the #1 cylinder is located). The purpose of the knock
sensor is to alert the Powertrain Control Module or PCM that the engine is
pinging or knocking. Code P0325 indicates that the readings from the #1 Knock
Sensor circuit are too low, too high, erratic or in some way outside of its
operational window and malfunctioning. This generally occurs in situations
where the timing of the spark and or fuel injection is advanced, or before top
dead center.
What causes the problem of
knock sensor malfunction (Sensor 1, Bank 1)?
- Defective
Knock Sensor
- Malfunctioning
Cooling System
- Incorrect
air/fuel ratio
- Damaged
Knock Sensor Circuit or connections
- Faulty
EGR System
Replace/Repair These Parts To Fix OBD Code P0325
- Knock Sensor - It is one of a very crucial part in the proper
functioning of your vehicle. Its function is to sense vibrations caused by
engine knock or detonation. Trouble Code P0325 will automatically set if knock
sensor is malfunctioned. So, replace it as soon as you find it faulty.
- Engine Coolant
System - A vehicle's engine-cooling system
serves not just to keep the engine cool, but to also keep its temperature warm
enough to ensure efficient, clean operation. Kindly replace or repair it if you
discover it flawed.
- Electronic Control
Unit - An Electronic Control Unit (ECU) is
any embedded system in automotive electronics that controls one or more of the
electrical systems or subsystems in a vehicle. Ensure its proper functioning to
avoid any trouble code.
Symptoms Of OBD Error Code P0325
It is
possible that once the failure code sets that you will not hear the pinging
anymore due to a change in the control strategy, but this change of control
results in less than optimal engine performance.
Common
Symptoms
- Knocking
sound from engine
- Illuminated

How To Correct P0325 Knock Sensor 1 Circuit Malfunction
The sensor
is often difficult to access since it needs to be close to the cylinders for
noise detection. The sensor should have a lead that is more accessible. Due to
the difficulty in accessing the knock sensor, this can be a difficult issue to
resolve. If you are not comfortable with any of these steps, please consult a well-trained
mechanic.
- Locate the
connector going to the knock sensor and run leads from the connector to a
multimeter.
- For 1 wire
sensor, connect the other lead to a ground on the engine. For 2 wire sensors,
connect the leads to both wires from the connector.
- Once
connected, set the multimeter to AC voltage. Tap a hammer nearby the knock
sensor and watch for some response is a common method for isolating the
problem, but in some models the knock sensor is only looking in certain
frequencies, so the sensor may be OK and not responding to a hammer tapping.
- If there
is not response, try modifying the engine to make it run lean.
- If there
is no response, then you need to replace the knock sensor, or the wiring
between the connector where the meter is attached and the knock sensor.
- If there
is a response, then investigate in more detail the wiring between where you
connected the meter and the engine controller.
- Look for
any loose wiring or poor connection due to rust, damaged, or improperly seated
terminals.
Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0325
The
following steps will help you to troubleshoot a P0325 error code:
- Begin your
diagnosis by visually inspecting the sensor and its connection.
- Locate the
knock sensor and tap on an engine location near the sensor (do not directly
strike the sensor). If the sensor is working correctly, you should see the
timing begin to retard. If not, you have a problem with the sensor or its
circuit.
- If your vehicle fails the basic test listed above, it’s time to determine what part of the sensor circuit is to blame. To test an old-style knock sensor, connect a digital multimeter set to AC voltage between the knock sensor output signal wire and a good ground. Then once again, tap on an engine location near the sensor. You should see an AC voltage reading on your digital multimeter. If not, the sensor is bad and should be replaced.
- If the
knock sensor checks out OK, but you still have P0325 code illuminated, you’ll
need to check the sensor circuit.
Common Mistakes When Diagnosing the P0325 Code
With any
code, even the most experienced technician can make simple mistakes and
overlook the basics and with this code common misdiagnosis which usually people
do are:
- Replacement
of Knock Sensor while the culprit was a cooling system
- Replacement
of Knock Sensor where in actual cause was an EGR system malfunction
