We know that the engine produces a lot of heat when it’s running, and this heat check is performed by the cooling system. To understand just how the cooling system is able to do its job, we need to know the various components that make up this cooling system. Water Pump - This pump is either driven by the fan belt or the timing belt on some newer vehicles. The pump is responsible for moving the coolant from the radiator, through the engine, and back into the radiator. There’s a shaft with a pulley on one end of the pump and a pump rotor on the other end. As the pulley spins with the help of the belt, the rotor is able to move the coolant. Radiator - Here’s where the all the cool air flows through. Your vehicle's radiator has a series of thin channels wherein the coolant flows through and cools by air flowing through it. It is hence extremely important to keep your coolant in great condition, otherwise it will close the channels in the radiator. To know when you should change your coolant, simply refer the instructions by your vehicle manufacturer. And ensure that your radiator is also in good shape. Thermostat - The thermostat has the task of controlling the flow of coolant through the engine. If your engine is below the needed temperature, the thermostat won’t allow the coolant to flow. The former is an open condition and the latter is known as a closed condition, both of which are not good for your vehicle. The thermostat should send the coolant, when the engine has warmed up to the perfect temperature only. Hoses - These carry the coolant from the radiator to the water pump and from the engine to the radiator. The hoses are typically of rubber and deteriorate with time. It’s vital that the hoses are flexible and not damaged or dry. You can check for damages by noticing any signs of cracks in the hose. Coolant - Coolant is mainly a mix of water and ethylene glycol. It is interchangeably also called Antifreeze. The coolant performs multiple functions. It prevents freezing, provides lubrication to the water pump, increased the water boiling point, and also keeps the cooling system free from rust and scales. This coolant can easily becoming a metal eating liquid if the PH level isn’t kept in check, so remember to check the PH level every time you check the freeze point of it.
