Error Code P0222: What It Means & What To Do?

OBD Code P0222 - Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch B Circuit Low Input

<<See All OBD Codes

The P0222 can be defined as throttle/ pedal position switch/ sensor B circuit low input. A range of acceptable voltage is specified by the manufacturer which can be produced from the throttle position sensor. The P0222 code would indicate that the voltage which has been produced by the throttle position sensor has been detected by the engine control module has fallen below this specification.

Learn More about OBD Error Code P0222

Want to learn something more about this fault code? The electronic throttle control actuator comprises of throttle control motor, throttle position sensors etc. The throttle position sensor would respond to the throttle valve movement.

There are two sensors in the throttle position sensor. These sensors are a type of potentiometers which can transform the throttle valve position into the output voltage and would start emitting the voltage signal to the engine control module. These sensors also help in detecting the opening as well as closing speed of the throttle valve and would feed the voltage signals to the engine control module.

The engine control module would judge the current opening angle of the throttle valve from these signals and the engine control module would control the throttle control motor to make the throttle valve opening angle properly in response to the driving condition.

What causes this problem with the Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch B Circuit?

  • Faults in the engine control module
  • The throttle body can start malfunctioning
  • Throttle position sensor that is out of alignment
  • Unplugged or damaged wiring might be associated with the throttle position sensor

Easy Diagnosis Of Engine Error OBD Code P0222

Here are some steps which you should follow in order to diagnose this fault code:

This fault code can be diagnosed by the mechanic by visually inspecting the throttle body and everything related with it for damages and faults. This would include making sure the throttle position sensor is mounted to the throttle body correctly and that the throttle body itself is operating properly

This inspection would also be done to make sure all electrical connectors are plugged in and properly secured. If everything associated with the throttle body passes the visual inspection, then the next step would be to test the throttle position sensor for proper voltage with a digital multimeter using the manufacturer’s recommended procedure

If the throttle position sensor fails the voltage test, the mechanic would then replace the throttle position sensor at the customer’s request. If the voltage test has been passed by the throttle position sensor, the mechanic would then use a high-tech scan tool to test the engine control module for faults, as it is one of the last parts unchecked in this system

Common Mistakes When Diagnosing The P0222 Code

This is one of the worst mistakes that someone can make when attempting to diagnose a check engine light. If a part is mentioned in a trouble code definition, then it does not mean that the part is faulty. In fact, it can also mean that the part or sensor is doing exactly what it should do in reality.
